Top mining, resources and energy skills in demand across Australia

Posted: 23rd Jan

Hays has revealed the top five job hotspots for the first half of 2020 nationally, including mining engineers, geotechnical engineers, drill and blast operators, heavy diesel fitters and dump truck operators.

The office of the chief economist predicted that Australia’s resources and energy commodity exports could set a record of $281 billion in 2019–2020.

Global geopolitical uncertainty has also led analysts to suggest that Australia may become the world’s largest gold producer by the mid-2020s.

This opens up job opportunities around Australia, particularly in Western Australia’s Pilbara and Goldfields regions, where staffing demand continues to trend upwards, according to Hays.

“With BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group all constructing new mines in Western Australia, which together require thousands of construction workers, the pressure is on to attract top talent,” Hays stated.

The recruitment agency expects “another active year” in Western Australia in 2020, where high job demand is coming from companies looking for base metals.

Queensland’s mining industry has also seen a noticeable increase in mining job activity in both metalliferous and coal sectors.

“The rise of the mining industry across coal and mineral processing combined with the skill shortage means there are certainly strong opportunities in Queensland for suitably qualified candidates,” Hays stated.

Victoria and New South Wales are facing skill shortages, as the latter competes with the higher volume of mine operations in Queensland and Western Australia.

There’s strong optimism for vacancies in South Australia and the Northern Territory alike, where increased mine activity has attracted skilled candidates across the sector.
