A unique opportunity exists for a highly motivated and outcome focused Safety Officer to join the team at Frew Foods International.

Frew Foods International is the largest employer in the Victorian Northern Grampians region, operating a modern protein processing plant in the town of Stawell. The plant provides a comprehensive range of products and services to retail, wholesale and food service customers across domestic and export markets.

The partnership strengthens both company’s high quality ‘farmgate to plate’ offering for consumers right across the globe.

Today Frew Foods International, in partnership with Thomas Foods International, is embarking on a major growth transformation program to further enhance its strong customer service commitment to quality, food safety, reliability and traceability, as well as focusing on growing its customer base through new distribution channels, product development, and customer relationships.

What does the role involve?

Based in Stawell, the Safety Officer will provide leadership in the development, implementation and continuous improvement of a WHS Management System in addition to culture formation through mentoring support to managers and employees within the processing plant. We’re looking for an experienced candidate who has the ability to build relationships and influence outcomes.

The role is primarily accountable to implement and ensure the continuous improvement of a WHS Management System in close consultation and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders including Site and Group management, employees, Group WHS Manager, auditors, relevant authorities and regulatory bodies and other WHS duty holders.

Key Responsibilities of the role:

  • Work with the operations team to embed a safe and positive work culture in the business.
  • Lead as a role model by demonstrating good safety practice through your actions and decisions and implementing safety best practice across the business.
  • Review, update and implement the safety management system, including development of policies, procedures, and Safe Operating Procedures with all departments.
  • Ensure OHS legislation and compliance requirements are adhered to.
  • Conduct internal inspections and audits.
  • Roll out a monthly toolbox talk.
  • Conduct a program of regular hazard identification and risk assessments.
  • Lead and coordinate completion of incident investigation reports and close out corrective actions, and develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines.
  • Emergency planning and incident response management.
  • Coach and support management to foster and promote a safety culture.
  • Drive continuous improvement of the OHS management system.
  • Manage Workers Compensation.
  • Coordinate safety training and maintain records.

What Experience will you have?

  • Demonstrated experience in a similar role, and in incident investigation and risk assessment.
  • OHS experience in a food manufacturing environment or similar.
  • Experience with safety management software systems .
  • Outstanding verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and the ability to liaise with people on all levels.
  • Workers Compensation administration experience.
  • Provide support to site personnel on risk management strategies, processes, and the integration of hazard control/s into our safety management system.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.


  • Certificate IV in WHS or above;
  • Certificate IV Workplace Training & Assessment (desirable) – able to conduct safety related training


  • This is a salaried position.
  • This position is based at Stawell in the Grampians region of Victoria.
  • Intra-state and interstate travel may be required.
  • Out of hours work may be required.
  • A valid Victorian Driver’s License is required.
  • Candidates will be required to participate in background checks including references, National Police Check, qualification verification, and drug & alcohol screening as part of our recruitment processes.
