Role purpose:

The Project Engineer (Systems) leads a group of employees in the systems engineering domain to the successful completion of product design integration and delivery tasks to meet the objectives of quality, time and cost. They manage and control all systems engineering-related activities in the project scope to deliver on requirements, budget and schedule. To ensure “lessons learned” and best practices are applied on projects and transferred to new projects. Main Engineering Interface with the internal and external customers.

He/She manages and maintains the regions workload and resource planning including supporting the administration of standard work-packages. They prepare regular business performance reporting and coordinate the gate review governance process.

The System engineering domain delivers; requirements and technical contract management, vehicle operability, vehicle architecture (functional, electrical, mechanical), Train Control Management Systems (TCMS), cyber security and software lab validation for Alstom rollingstock projects across Australia.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Project Lead / Software Project Lead:
  • Ensure for systems engineering product development activities that they are in line with the product concept requirements and the project-specific requirements. Manage them, Capture all product decisions and requirements, so that the direction of the Product and project is understood.
  • Translate the Product requirements into product development deliverables, articulating the associated data necessary to define the schedule of activities, resources and budgets requirements.
  1. Systems Engineering Planning and Govenance
  • Ensure that the specific governance processes, tools and metrics for Systems Engineering to drive performance improvement within the project are used to provide an accurate and representative picture of the projects status and performance.
  • For all Systems product and project development activities, ensure that all bids and projects are in line with the appropriate gates and that any deviations identified at gates are closed in a timely manner so as not to impact the overall schedule; simultaneously ensure that quality is not compromised.
  • Implement the necessary monitoring to rigorously ensure that work packages are delivered as per expectations and that resolutions are implemented to address deviations from plan.
  • Meticulously ensure that the critical process aspects of the product development team are routinely applied for change management, config management, management of risk, management of opportunity, management of design and for gate reviews.
  1. Resource Management
  • Diligently ensure that all engineering activity needs for all phases (bids, pre-NTP, projects & initiatives) are collected and accurately represented in P6, six months in advance of the requirement. Coordinating, communicating and prioritising systems engineering capability and capacity across the region.
  • Hold direct responsibility for the implementation of a dynamic resource management process to enable reallocation of resources from one phase / activity to another, where this is in the best interest of the business to do so.
  • Hold responsibility for escalating resource issues that cannot be managed within the product / project for securing the associated necessary resolution.
  1. Configuration and Change Management
  • To establish and maintain the integrity of work products using configuration identification, control, and status accounting. Responsible for planning and controlling changes by identifying the work products that are likely to change, establishing relationships among them, defining mechanisms for managing different versions of work products, controlling the changes imposed and auditing and reporting on the changes made.

  • Provide strong project leadership to deliver best in class product and project performance within the region.
  • Leading by example, provide inspirational leadership to motivate and develop direct reports, creating a positive, hard working, results oriented, can do culture within the project teams.

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with key partners across the business, with particular emphasis on key relationships within the Systems Core Team.

Qualifications & Functional Knowledge Required

  • BSc degree, MA or PhD graduate
  • Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) desirable
  • Electrical Engineer desirable
  • Typically minimum 8 years of relevant work experience with BSc degree or 5 to 8 years of relevant work experience or PhD degree and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience
