About Our Team: 

The digital team within Service NSW currently manages over 200 digital products, developed and managed by over 50 cross-functional product teams.

We take a cloud-native approach building most of our services in the cloud and hosted in container orchestration platforms. The majority of our digital services are bespoke applications, leveraging shared services to ensure cost effectiveness and scalability. 

We use lean, user-centred design and Extreme Programming (XP) practices (including Test Driven Development, Pair Programming and CI/CD) to design and build fast, stable software, and get it into our customers’ hands quickly. We are committed to iterative delivery using the build, measure, learn paradigm, and pride ourselves on being responsive to customers’ needs, consistently delivering value to the people of NSW. 
 
About the Role? 

We are looking for a?Head of Software Engineering?to join our team. This role is responsible?for leading and maturing an enterprise-scale engineering practice. It will help spread quality engineering practices and establish supporting frameworks and structures to allow software engineers to do their best work, fulfill their potential, and deliver quality software continuously. 
 
Key responsibilities include: 

  • Proactively introduce and drive key initiatives to improve software engineering practices, capability and skills, informed by data, experiments and frequent feedback 
  • Establish structures to champion, share, grow and coordinate quality engineering practices
  • Provide strategic guidance and engineering direction / expertise across multiple product portfolios, including facilitation and communication to bring teams together
  • Drive and continuously refine the recruitment process for engineers across the division 

About You? 

To be successful in this role you will have a rich software engineering background, including experience in full stack web development with exposure to a broad range of technologies.?You have experience in Extreme Programming (XP), including Test Driven Development and Pair Programming, and are willing to spread the values, principles and practices underpinning this approach. 

You have a strong product mindset, having worked closely with cross-disciplinary product teams. 

You have experience leading, mentoring and coaching a large group of engineers across teams, ideally in a complex enterprise context. 

You are an effective leader with strong communication and stakeholder management skills.?You foster effective working relationships with people and teams at all levels, using an approach grounded in empathy and curiosity. You align diverse people and perspectives through lateral influence and using data and experiments.?
