  • Harnessing the intersection of science and economics
  • Influential leadership role
  • Flexible location and work practices

The company
Natural Capital Economics (NCEconomics) is part of the Alluvium Group that brings together five organisations sharing a common purpose: to make a positive difference to the world.

They are scientists, planners, engineers, strategists, analysts, and economists. They combine these skills to address the complex, systemic, and intractable issues that face our society, environment, and economy. By solving these problems, they transform the way we live and the health and productivity of our catchments, rivers, landscapes, coasts, and cities.

NCEconomics formed in 2016 to bring to the market national leading economists and social scientists working in the management of natural and economic resources to achieve positive change – effectively they combine science with economics to offer integrated multidisciplinary solutions.

The role
As Principal Economist you will influence the direction of the group, drive ongoing growth, and be responsible for project delivery and people leadership. Sydney, Newcastle, or Canberra are preferred locations with other locations able to be considered, for the right candidate.

Joining the NCEconomics team, you will work closely with the scientists and engineers in other Alluvium Group companies to undertake applied analysis, provide technical guidance along with leadership and contribute to business growth.

This area of the business draws on expertise that spans:

  • Knowledge and application of economic tools in policy decision making
  • Applied microeconomic analysis to solve problems and inform decision making
  • Cost-benefit analysis and business case development to support clients in understanding and quantifying costs and benefits associated with alternative project, program options, and policies
  • Non-market valuation techniques suitable for the water and natural resource management sectors
  • Non-structural best management practices to achieve outcomes by advising on the application of government regulation, economic instruments, and other institutional arrangements

About you
Experience as a principal level economist is a must. Knowledge in the business themes of Climate Change Risk Assessment and Adaptation, Urban Liveability and Rural Futures, within the NSW, ACT or Federal context will be viewed favourably.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Demonstrated passion and ambition to make a difference
  • Broad, high level, relationships across industry
  • Demonstrated experience in business growth through industry leadership and professional networks
  • An ability to apply economic theory and tools to complex environmental and societal issues
  • Experience in providing multidimensional and comprehensive insights to applied microeconomic analysis, cost-benefit analysis, economic impact assessment, and environmental accounting.
  • Experience leading projects as a Project Manager or Project Director as well as supervising, encouraging, and supporting more junior staff
  • An interest in thought leadership and be involved in industry forums, research and presenting insights

The rewards
An important part of the business is the ownership structure. Alluvium is a staff owned business with over 45 percent of staff having ownership. They are committed to the continued broadening of the ownership to staff who support and are actively engaged in the attainment of strategic goals.

Talent Nation strongly encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people of all cultures, abilities, sex, and genders.
