Senior Library Technician

  • VPS 3.1
  • Fixed term until 9th May 2023
  • 0.6 FTE

About the role:
This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join an experienced/professional and technologically engaged team, focusing on processing, cataloguing and archival description of picture and manuscript collections.

The Library's extraordinary collections include photographs, works on paper, paintings, realia, ephemera, sculpture; and the records, personal papers and objects from individuals, families, organisations and businesses. The collections you will work with may be born-digital, turned-digital or physical, with both modern and historic content.

You are someone who actively engages with continuous improvement, with a focus on creating high quality metadata to meet the information and collection access needs of current and future users. You will have an interest in applying new technologies to improve the experience of library users.

A Senior Library Technician within the Description Original Materials Team is accountable for the following measurable outcomes:

  • Supporting development and discovery of the Library's collections through selection, acquisition and description of collection material.
  • Providing excellent service to Library visitors to facilitate access to collections onsite and online.
  • Working effectively with colleagues and fostering effective collaboration through participation in projects, working groups and knowledge-sharing.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement activities and adhering to relevant policies and processes to ensure services meet best practice and Library requirements.
  • Contributing towards a positive and professional image of the Library through exceptional personal presentation and maintenance of public spaces and work areas.

About you:

You have demonstrated knowledge of contemporary descriptive and archival practice for pictures and manuscripts, and a strong understanding of appropriate handling processes for original materials.

You are curious and enjoy investigating data gaps and imperfections, descriptive standards and provenance of collections to develop and capture full bibliographical and archival details. You are open to learning to use new tools and techniques, to update or manipulate collection data in bulk.

You are skilled in the application of descriptive standards within catalogue records or archival metadata; such as RDA, DACS and/or ISAD(G), DCRM (G) and/or DCRM(MSS). You have knowledge of contemporary structural metadata standards (MARC, EAD).

You will ensure collection material is discoverable by creating, enhancing, and maintaining quality metadata. Your knowledge of descriptive standards and tools will support the Library in providing high quality services to meet the information and collection access needs of current and future users.

How to apply:

Please submit your application via www.careers.vic.gov.au, attaching your resume, and a cover letter (maximum 3 pages) summarising how you meet the key selection criteria (found in the position description).
