Senior Analyst

Objective of the role

Suncorp believes in the value and the power of its data to improve its business performance.

The Data Science & AI Centre of Excellence exists to accelerate the value that Suncorp gets from its investments in turning data into tangible value. It does this in two ways:

  1. By developing important use-cases (experiments, prototypes, fully productionised instances) within the team that are integrated into our business processes at scale.
  2. By supporting strategic leaders and the broader data science community across the Suncorp Group to invest in the right initiatives and deliver these utilising best practices. We do this by:
    • Developing strong business relationships and providing strategic advice to core DS & AI decision makers.

Enabling optimal DS & AI initiative development wherever it occurs, internally or via external partners and vendors. This will be via our continuing drive of developing Suncorp’s Data Science & AI ecosystem, which includes its platform and the way that it is integrated into core systems and channels across the Group.

It will also encompass development tools, processes and recommended governance that speed up the process of building great models and algorithms that perform optimally and are well risk managed

Key Accountabilities

Problem Solving Capability/Innovation

  • Interact with business unit customers to understand their needs and contribute to developing data science solutions that can create value for them.
  • Translate business requirements into an innovative and iterative data science solution design that enables an expedited delivery of value to business unit customers.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of possible data sources and analytical techniques that could be used to provide a superior business outcome.
  • Solve complex technical problems using data science techniques.

Project Delivery/Agile Focus

  • Deliver complex data science components (data, models, algorithms, advice etc.) using limited onshore and offshore resources.
  • Work within an agile framework to deliver incremental value to business customers throughout a project’s lifecycle.

Control Framework

  • Check for reasonableness and quality of the core analytical components they are responsible for (data, models, algorithms, advice etc.) being delivered to Group customers.

Subject Matter Expertise

  • Possess exceptional technical capability in one or more areas of data science/machine learning.
  • Advise other team members (and wider DET and other business unit team members) on relevant matters.

People Management Skills

  • Interact well with team members and leaders, with some technical leadership.
  • Collaborate within the team and with DET and other business units

About you

Qualifications

  • Superior results in relevant advanced technical bachelor’s degree (statistics, actuarial, engineering, maths etc). Mandatory
  • Post graduate degree or honours class 1 or 2A in relevant statistical or data science related area. Desired.
  • Membership of relevant professional body (IAPA, IAA etc). - Desired
  • At least 2 years practice in commercial complex data science/multivariate data analysis, with a specialist skill set

Technical Skills

  • Mandatory: Advanced subject matter expertise in one or more data science/advanced analytics areas. Must have experience in delivering complex multivariate predictive analytics solutions in a commercial context (eg. generalised linear models, NLP, tree-based approaches such as random forests, GBMs etc).
  • Highly valued: Proficient in unstructured data analysis, open source advanced analytics solutions, and/or experience in the automation of various components of the analytical process
  • Proficient with demonstrated experience in machine learning techniques.
  • A desire to continually upskill and adapt technical skills to the changing data science technical landscape
