The Department

Alfred Health’s Acute Physiotherapy Service provides physiotherapy services to the patients of The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital. Alfred Health’s Acute Physiotherapy Service is the amalgamation of The Alfred Physiotherapy Department and the Sandringham Hospital Physiotherapy Department. The Acute Physiotherapy Service is organised into five functional streams, namely: Intensive Care, Musculoskeletal, Respiratory, PAN (Progressive Illness, Aged Care and Neurosciences), and Sandringham. The first four streams are located at The Alfred site, with the fifth and latter stream based at the Sandringham site. The Acute Physiotherapy Service consists of approximately 62.0 eft and 120 people. The Acute Physiotherapy Service has a proud history of clinical and academic excellence. It remains strongly committed to further pursuing excellence in physiotherapy.

Alfred Health's Subacute Physiotherapy Department is based at Caulfield Hospital.This service provides an extensive range of inpatient and ambulatory services in the areas of rehabilitation, aged care, and transition care services. The subacute Physiotherapy department has 47.0EFT (70 staff) including 55 physiotherapists and also professionally supports a further 36 staff working in other ambulatory and community services on site. The department provides subacute clinical services and expertise in the following areas: neurology, ABI, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury, orthopaedics, amputees, burns, complex regional pain, cardiac rehabilitation, aged care, transitional care and aged psychiatry. In addition to these services the department is also responsible for the day to day management of the hydrotherapy pool.

Caulfield, Alfred and Sandringham physiotherapy departments work closely together to provide a consistently high quality and equitable service across the continuum. There is strong commitment to a service delivery model that can flexibly move resources across all sites to accommodate fluctuations in service demand. Physiotherapy staff routinely rotate across all Alfred Health campuses and support the weekend and after hours services on all campuses. Caulfield Physiotherapy Department is a major partner in the Alfred Health Physiotherapy Clinical Schools for both La Trobe and Monash universities and in this role provides core clinical placements for more than 80 students annually. There is a strong commitment to professional development and research with staff able to access an extensive continuing education program on site and the support of the Professor of Physiotherapy for research activities.

The Role

The Senior Physiotherapist (Neurosciences - Rotational) is responsible for the ongoing development and provision of physiotherapy services across the acute and subacute sites of Alfred Health, and includes the service provision to the acute Neurosurgery, Neurology and Stroke units, and subacute areas of Neurological Rehabilitation and Acquired Brain Injury, and any other areas assigned to them, in consultation with senior clinician(s) and stream leader at the level of a developing expert. *Experience in the areas of spinal rehabilitation and/or community/in-home rehabilitation would be highly desirable. The Senior Physiotherapist (Neurosciences - Rotational) shares responsibility for the education of physiotherapy students and the supervision and professional development of Grade 1 staff assign to their units, with the Senior Clinician(s) and Stream Leader. The Senior Physiotherapist (Neurosciences - Rotational) has an important role contributing to the development of individuals, the clinical team and the physiotherapy service through good leadership, teamwork and communication.
