Community Engagement Support Officer – Tackling Indigenous Smoking Program -Katherine, NT - Full-time

Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation delivering primary and clinical health care services to the Aboriginal people in Katherine and surrounding communities. Wurli prides itself on delivering a range of health services to the community in a style and manner that makes clients feel welcome and comfortable. Services include acute and general care, chronic disease, men’s health, alcohol and other drugs, social and emotional wellbeing and client support services.

The Tackling Indigenous Smoking Program focuses on population health promotion activities to prevent the uptake of smoking, promoting smoking cessation, and reducing exposure to second-hand smoke among Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders people. The Community Engagement Support Officer role is responsible for the ongoing community engagement in the Tackling Indigenous Smoking Program through health education, events and health promotion activities. The role will be pivotal in assisting Wurli address the health inequities related to tobacco use for their people and engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait people of marginalisation into a welcoming and non-threatening health intervention and wellbeing service.

The Community Engagement Support Officer role is responsible for the ongoing engagement and coordination of the relevant communities in the Strong Indigenous Families program throughout the provision of client liaison services, associated transportation and community participation in ‘Healthy Relationships’ workshops. Key service deliverables include:

  • Build and maintains relationships based on trust, support and growth with eligible women, their families, team colleagues and community members.
  • Introduces the program to prospective clients and provides advice to the team on issues that may positively influence the client’s experience within the program.
  • Provide transportation services for clients for services as identified in the family safety plans
  • Provide culturally appropriate and interpretative support and assistance to clients, their family, the community, and all other key stakeholders involved in the provision of Strong Indigenous Families program.
  • Support and encourage individuals, families and community to become involved in healthy lifestyle choices with a harm minimisation and harm reduction focus in relation to family and domestic violence

    We are looking for a “NON SMOKER”.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of Aboriginal Culture relevant to Katherine town and local communities
  • Sound literacy skills, including computer literacy

  • Current National Police Certificate (no less than 3 months from issue date)
