  • CSIRO is playing a lead role in the development of the world’s largest radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA will be co-located in Australia, at CSIRO’s Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It will address fundamental unanswered questions about our Universe including how the first stars and galaxies formed after the Big Bang, how dark energy is accelerating the expansion of the Universe, the nature of gravity, and the search for life beyond Earth.

    The Australian Government’s Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources has funded CSIRO to support the establishment of the SKA in Australia. The Senior Communication Advisor will drive external campaigns and communication activities to support Australia’s engagement in the SKA.

    The role will report to the Communication Manager for CSIRO’s Space and Astronomy business unit, and directly support the activities of CSIRO’s MRO and SKA team.

    Your duties will include:
  • Developing communication strategies by drawing on the knowledge and expertise of the Communication Manager, and working closely with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strengthening and maintaining a network that facilitates the exchange of information between CSIRO, local stakeholders, and the Australian and international SKA communities.
  • Working collaboratively with the Australian and international SKA communication teams on projects related to the SKA and the MRO.
  • Translating strategies into working plans and delivering on them by:
  • Creating accurate and engaging content including project updates, briefing documents, web content and multimedia assets to support Australia's SKA activity
  • Contributing to, and sometimes leading, event management including media and VIP visits to the MRO and public events.
  • Liaising with media to identify and develop compelling stories about the SKA, manage interviews and requests for information
  • Engaging with staff and key stakeholders and tracking and monitoring key metrics to measure success of communications plans

    Salary: AU$100k - AU$108k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

    To be considered you will need:
  • A relevant tertiary qualification and relevant experience in communications – PR, marketing, digital, media or journalism.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing communication strategies that are aligned to business objectives.
  • High level of proficiency liaising with media including pitching stories, managing interviews, and creating by‐lines.
  • Experience creating content for digital audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and ability to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and to show attention to detail and quality focus.
