JOB DESCRIPTION

Who are we?

Gilchrist Connell is a leading Australian insurance law firm with several complimentary practices.

We predominantly advise our insurer clients on complex coverage issues and we act in the defence of claims against insureds across all classes of general insurance. We also provide employment, WHS, insolvency, corporate and commercial advice, as well as front-end solutions to businesses throughout all stages of their life cycle. We have offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Gilchrist Connell is a trusted adviser to many of the world’s most sophisticated insurance sector operators including large local and international insurers, Lloyd’s syndicates, their insureds, self-insurers, brokers and underwriting agencies.

Our expertise is recognised through our regular inclusion as finalists or winners of national insurance industry awards and respected independent directories. The firm maintains active industry involvement with our people holding roles in peak bodies such as AILA, APIG and YIPS across Australia.

Our commitment to you is to offer a highly rewarding career without compromising genuine work-life balance, as was recognised in 2020 when we were one of only 25 law firms announced as an Australasian Lawyer Employer of Choice.

We believe that partnering with sophisticated clients on high quality work and enjoying a rewarding personal life should not be mutually exclusive. The firm has a genuinely positive work culture, built on transparency in feedback, support of flexible working practices, leading support programs and cloud-based technology platforms.

The firm has seen rapid expansion over the last six months with a net increase in staff of over 30 percent. This expansion has occurred to meet a surge in client demand, which we forecast to continue through FY22 and beyond.

Why the role?

We are preparing our capacity and capability to meet the needs of our ongoing client demand. This provides a fantastic opportunity to advance the career of a 4-7 year PAE insurance practitioner to support the work of our dynamic Sydney team and our high performing national practice.

This role is for an experienced Associate looking to improve on their experience as they progress, or a junior Senior Associate looking for a supportive environment to consolidate their skills as they continue toward more senior roles within the practice.

What is the opportunity?

This opportunity involves working directly for partners, Alex Haslam and Katherine Czoch.

Alex defends insureds and provides insurance coverage advice on matters involving professional negligence, directors and officer’s liability, construction disputes, defamation, warranty and indemnity, crime/fidelity and public and product liability. Alex frequently acts as defence or coverage counsel on class actions and other large litigation.

Katherine advises local and London insurers on complex insurance policy coverage matters, including multi-tiered global insurance programs, class actions and regulatory proceedings commenced against financial institutions following the Banking Royal Commission, large infrastructure and construction projects, and multi-jurisdictional proceedings commenced in the technology and life sciences space. She also defends proceedings commenced against directors and officers and insured professionals across a variety of industries including financial, construction and technology.

· Practical and client focused in solving problems

· Previous exposure to business development with a natural ability to cultivate quality relationships with our industry leading clients

· A team player who can collaborate on work and has the skills to coach, mentor and develop junior staff and gains satisfaction from seeing them succeed

What do we offer you?

· A great and dynamic culture! Our firm has a true collegiate buzz and is rapidly growing in response to client demand. Our partners are accessible and supportive and have a genuine willingness to involve you in client relationships at a high level.

· Flexibility to manage your time. Be efficient, get your work done, and go enjoy your personal life.

· Responsibility for and meaning in your work. We believe that you have to enjoy your work and be given the ownership to make decisions and solve problems for sophisticated and knowledgeable clients.

· We are committed to fostering a truly diverse and inclusive workplace so that all our people can flourish and fulfil their highest potential, for the benefit of our people, the firm, and our clients.

· We value our role as a corporate citizen by putting words into actions through our pro bono legal services, volunteering and community giving.
