About the Project

McConnell Dowell is the constructor within the Western Program Alliance (WPA) which forms part of the Victorian State government’s ambitious level crossing removal program. The Alliance brings together the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM), and Arup and Mott MacDonald as design partners.

WPA was formed in 2017 and following the successful completion of several major projects, is now focused on delivering the level crossing removals at Werribee (Werribee Street & Cherry Street), Hoppers Crossing (Old Geelong Road) and Cranbourne (the Cranbourne Line Upgrade), as well as developing future works projects.

Your Opportunity

We are currently seeking applications from experienced and highly skilled construction professionals to join us in the role of Occupations Manager. You will be responsible for leading and management of all construction activities in a major rail occupation. This incorporates accountability for delivering the construction works to best practice safety, quality and environmental standards and for achieving both social and financial outcomes.

As Occupations Manager, you will be accountable for:

  • Planning, organising and coordinating occupation construction activities in accordance with construction schedules and staging whilst constantly monitoring and reporting the status of planning, safety, environmental and quality activities
  • Continual interaction and on-site contact with multi-disciplinary alliance team, subordinate staff and, where necessary, weekly employees, to ensure efficient and productive field activities
  • Ensuring all activities relating to quality are performed in compliance with the requirements of the relevant specifications, codes and standards, which form part of the contract
  • Ensuring that all subcontractors are advised of their obligations under applicable legislation, codes of practice, the Project Execution Plan and all conditions set out in the contractual documents, and that those obligations are met
  • Controlling and motivating the workforce and manage the employee disciplinary process
  • Timely submittal of financial reports, job progress reports and other site performance information as requested by the Company and the Client
  • Planning and driving the occupation strategy in conjunction with multi-disciplinary team to deliver sufficient resource and capability to meet defined project targets
  • Identifying risk and opportunities along with developing treatments to mitigate or enhance respectively
  • Ordering/Purchasing of materials in accordance with planned delivery dates as required by the Construction Schedule
  • Procurement and utilisation of plant resources
  • Providing guidance, coaching and mentorship to all junior staff to ensure they have understanding and are supported

Requirements for this role are:

  • Industry relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Minimum eight years’ engineering experience in construction with proven experience in a leadership position
  • Competent in understanding and promoting HS&E imperatives and MMS procedures
  • Proven record in planning, organising and leading a diverse labour force
  • Sound negotiation and problem-solving skills, clear communication verbal and written
  • Manages to timeframes, cost conscious, and achievement driven
