About the opportunity

As part of the Counselling and Psychological Services team, you will deliver short term, brief intervention counselling and / or psychological services to students who present with mild to moderate mental health issues.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide short-term counselling and psychological interventions to students who present with various mental health, personal, work and study related issues, using culturally appropriate evidence based counselling and psychological therapeutic methods
  • Refer student clients as appropriate for medical, psychiatric and other forms of assessment and/or treatment according to accepted practices of the Service
  • Undertake risk assessment and crisis / debrief sessions as needed. Assess the type and severity of issues presented by student clients during the process
  • Liaise with student client relatives, relevant university staff and community agencies as appropriate

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Mental Health (counselling, mental health social work, psychology)
  • Eligibility for registration with PACFA / PACAWA or AASW (Mental Health Social Worker) or AHPRA as Provisional Psychologist or General Psychologist
  • Relevant work experience at an appropriate level
  • Ability to assess risk and apply a range of counselling and therapeutic interventions appropriate to student client presentations
  • Demonstrated high level of communication skills and interpersonal skills specific to consultation, liaison, negotiation, provision of workshops and clinical service delivery within the tertiary educational environment
  • Ability to work as a professional in a multi-disciplinary team committed to the wider Student Services goals
