Job Description

The BHP Operating System (BOS) is the foundation for BHP’s 10-year safety and productivity strategy and will establish an operating capability that provides a sustainable, strategic source of competitive advantage.
BOS will fundamentally change our culture, workforce capability, systems and processes to systemically embed continuous improvement. The net result will be stable and predictable operations with standardised work as a foundation tool and the creation of 70,000 problem solvers across BHP, improving the work they do and making better decisions.

The position of Head of BOS Deployment and Performance & Improvement – Olympic Dam will be based out of the BHP South Australia Adelaide office with regular travel to site (Roxby Downs) required.
One of Australia’s largest mines and a complex minerals processing operation, Olympic Dam, is unique in that we produce Copper, Uranium, Gold and Silver. The local township of Roxby Downs is an active and progressive community offering a variety of modern, well-equipped housing, educational, health, sporting, leisure, shopping and cultural facilities.

The role will report to the Vice President BHP Operating System (BOS) and maintain a close working relationship with the Vice President – Asset Performance & Improvement. Focused on supporting the Olympic Dam Asset, the role will also be part of the Olympic Dam Asset Leadership Team working in partnership with General Manager’s and other Functional leaders.

The Head of BOS Deployment and Performance & Improvement will:

  • Plan and deploy BOS at the Asset, ensuring that the Asset is enabled to deliver against BHPs commitment to create a sustainable improvement culture and performance mindset focused on delivering safe, stable performance and improvement at the lowest possible cost.
  • Lead a diverse team of Site Coaches, Line Coaches, Line Technical Specialists, Deployment Coaches and other improvement professionals
  • Work in collaboration with GM’s and Functional Leaders to ensure that BOS ways of working are embedded and helping to drive better outcomes for the Business. In doing so the role has the accountability to ensure that appropriate capability in line leadership is being built through deployment, and that this is evidenced by increasing Operational Excellence Index (OEI) scores and performance outcomes enabled through this.
  • Drive high value improvement through working in partnership with Asset leaders to identify, plan and deliver the highest impact operational improvement projects. To achieve this, the role will oversee the formation and management of multidisciplinary teams with Asset and Functional team members and in doing so will leverage the full capabilities of BHP’s Technical Group.
  • Support the development and delivery of improvement initiative pipelines for the Asset so they are sufficient to achieve unit cost outcomes and other key metrics where improvement is required to meet or exceed Asset commitments


Skills And Other Qualifications

You will have experience leading and delivering high-impact, large scale improvement projects in a mining or asset intensive context. You will be customer focussed, skilled at understanding their needs and helping to identify solutions to their problems. You will be experienced at forming and leading multidisciplinary teams with the goal of achieving measurable and sustained value for Olympic Dam. A strategic and analytical thinker, you will demonstrate strong business acumen and be able to get to the root cause of problems.

You will be able to establish credibility through your strong technical ability, leadership and excellent communication skills. You will be comfortable working in complex matrix work environments, and be able to navigate stakeholders in a global and dynamic organisation through your influencing, coaching and mentoring skills. An ability to constructively question ideas and build trusted relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders will be essential.

You will bring a deep understanding of key business and mining industry performance drivers and will have demonstrated experience working within an innovative, best practice continuous improvement function.
