The position of Solicitor, Litigation forms a part of the Legal and Legislation branch within the Corporate Services Group.

This position sits in the Legislation team in the Public and Administrative Law Unit within the Legal and Legislation Branch.

The Solicitor position will be responsible for providing legal advice across the department's portfolios and assisting with managing the department's litigation. Legal work is focused on the department's portfolios and litigation within the Australia Court and tribunal system.

The role also involves advising on administrative law and public law matters for a diverse client groups including regional staff, policy officers and administrative decision makers. The position holder will undertake research and analysis of complex legal and legislative issues, and will prepare legal advice, reports, briefs and correspondence.

The key accountabilities of the role will include:

  • Provide litigation services and legal advice on complex disputes, court proceedings and policy matters on behalf of the department.
  • Prepare instructions for external lawyers, briefings to Counsel, and legal advice for clients in relation to substantive legal issues and procedure as it relates to various jurisdictions.
  • Assist in the preparation, drafting and review of a range of legal and court-related documentation, including correspondence, court applications, affidavits, settlement agreements and consent orders and assist in the preparation of evidence and management of the subpoenas.
  • Undertake high level legal research and analysis of complex legal, legislative and policy issues.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with stakeholders across the client program areas in the department, law firms and advisers, and external stakeholders.
