Head of Technology

Reporting to the Deputy Director, Chief Revenue Officer & Chief Financial Officer you will be responsible for end-to-end technology across the Museum, driving the Museum’s technology strategy and delivering business transformation projects to ensure the Museum utilises best practice technology in achieving its Corporate Plan objectives.

This role collaborates with the Museum executive and team to determine the Museum’s technology needs and proactively seeks opportunities to leverage technology to enhance the delivery of Museum services and customer experiences.

You will also manage the Museum’s technology team and outsourced Managed Service Provider (MSP) to deliver day-to-day operational technology including infrastructure, secure network, applications, telecommunications, service desk support, disaster recovery processes and procedures, policies, procurement and effective budget and vendor management.

Key responsibilities will included but not limited to the following:

  • In collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders, develop and implement a rolling 4-year technology strategy that is aligned with the Museum’s Corporate Plan and includes clear, achievable deliverables throughout individual years
  • Ensure the Museum’s technology assets, applications, policies and procedures are fit for purpose
  • Reporting on key technology deliverables per the technology strategy and Corporate Plan to the museum Audit Committee and Executive
  • Budget, forecast and manage technology operating and capital expenditure in line with budget
  • Procurements of goods and services, process purchase orders and receipt goods
  • Implement an effective change management framework including communication strategy to ensure team buy-in to the Museum’s technology strategy and vision, positive participation in the change process and successful implementation of technology initiatives
  • Utilise a risk-based approach to maintain an effective cyber and information security framework in accordance with best practice and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure a robust Disaster Recovery Plan is in place that supports the Museum’s Business Continuity Plan
  • Lead technology projects in line with best practice to ensure projects are supported by robust business cases, well managed, properly resourced and project requirements are met (including timeline, budget and outcomes), project risks are effectively mitigated, effective project governance measures ensure issues are identified, reported and resolved on a timely basis, and effective communication to stakeholders)
  • Develop and negotiate contractual arrangements with vendors
  • In collaboration with the Digital and Marketing teams and other key business stakeholders, develop a Data Strategy to effectively utilise the Museum’s Customer Relationship Management system and other related systems and applications
  • Represent the Museum at industry meetings and external forums and networks
  • Lead, coach and manage the technology section, including monitoring and managing section performance, emerging issues, risks, budget and commercial management in line with the Museum’s strategic goals

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience working as a senior technology leader managing teams and sizeable budgets (c$4m p.a.).
  • Formal (preferably at postgraduate level) qualifications in technology or a similar discipline with substantial experience at a senior level.
  • Proven experience in technology strategy development and implementation including the integration of complex technology systems, transition of existing on-premises services and business applications to a hybrid cloud-hosted services environment, and optimisation of cloud-hosted services to effectively control costs.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in preparing Board-level reports and other written documents including procurement plans, contracts, presentations, proposals, communications, briefings, policies and strategies for a variety of audiences.
  • Proven project management experience including the ability to prepare business cases and initiate, manage and complete technology projects on time and within budget to achieve project objectives.
  • Knowledge of procurement processes including public tenders, experience in negotiating and managing contracts including service level agreements, and ability to foster sound working relationships with suppliers and vendors of IT services.
  • Experience in change management including in relation to projects affecting a number of business units with varying user requirements.
  • Demonstrated hands on experience in IT service management and delivery including audio visual technology.
  • Sound knowledge of cyber security and disaster recovery frameworks and experience in incident management/ reinstatement of services.
  • An understanding of emerging and disruptive technologies – particularly in relation to customer-focused technology - and the ability to provide informed and evidence-based recommendations on technology decisions and directions.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders including Board members, senior executives and non-technical business users.
  • Resilience and ability to achieve optimal business outcomes when faced with pushback from business users.
