The Garvan Institute of Medical Research brings together world-leading basic and translational researchers with expert clinicians to break down barriers between traditional scientific disciplines and find solutions to disease.

The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Manager Governance, Risk & Performance, the Risk, Insurance and Compliance Officer will provide support in the coordination, development, implementation, oversight and continuous improvement of Garvan's governance and risk frameworks. In addition, the role will support Garvan's organisational performance and continuous improvement functions.

This is a permanent full-time position with an annual salary of $95,000AU plus superannuation and salary packaging benefits. You'll have the benefit of working closely with the executive leadership team and with some of the top researchers and academicians.

Key Responsibilities

Risk management:

  • Establishing, coordinating and refining Garvan's Enterprise Risk Management Framework, insurance processes, compliance frameworks and activities that are essential to Garvan's good governance and performance.
  • Working across the institute assisting risk owners with the identification of core strategic and operational risks management and assessing the effectiveness of risk mitigation processes and risk reporting.
  • Assisting in the testing and regular assessment of the Institute's Critical Incident, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery processes and practices.

Insurance and internal audit support:

  • Managing the insurance portfolio including renewals, and management of claims working directly with Garvan's external Insurance Broker.
  • Working with the external Internal Auditor assisting in the timely completion of the internal audit program; follow-up with audit action owners, ensuring closures.

Compliance and reporting:

  • Assisting in the development of compliance programs and systems across the Institute, including assisting in maintaining updated standards, regulatory policies, procedures and processes.
  • Assisting in providing strong governance support to the Institute to ensure legislative responsibilities are met, and internal controls are maintained.
  • Assisting in the development of legislative and regulatory reports

About You
A self-motivated, effective communicator with excellent interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills including the ability to liaise with a wide range of stakeholders and be a translator between science language and corporate language to non-technical audiences.

  • Relevant tertiary degree - or nearing completion of a relevant degree; or working towards or membership of CIA/ CPA / CA qualifications are also preferred.
  • Background in risk and controls with at least 3-5 years of experience in relevant industry, professional services and/or relevant commercial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in multiple discipline areas support governance, risk, compliance, internal audit, organisational performance, project management, etc.
  • Understanding of and passion for a research environment, MRI or similar organisational setting - direct experience in a research or scientific field preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience with Protecht is desirable
