About the opportunity The Research Associate will spend 50% of their time providing technical and scientific microscopy support to users of Microscopy Australia's Sydney node, across a portfolio of research projects with applications in nuclear science. Located on the University's Camperdown campus, the Sydney node is a Core Research Facility that provides access to a comprehensive suite of world-class microscopy and microanalysis tools. They will provide external users with assistance with nanoscale characterisation, such as scanning electron microscopy (including orientation mapping techniques), advanced transmission electron microscopy and/or atom probe tomography. Users are expected to come from industry, ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) and the broader scientific community. There will be opportunities for the candidate to lead research related to the applications of microscopy to nuclear science, as appropriate to providing Microscopy Australia researchers with the best possible research infrastructure for atomic scale materials characterisation. The other 50% of the role will support the development of a complex neutron sample environment at ANSTO with capabilities enabling in-situ laser metal deposition, for use on the Kowari and Dingo beamlines. This part of the role will be under the direction of Prof. Anna Paradowska, from the School of Civil Engineering, in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney. They will pursue analysis of samples fabricated with additive manufacturing by utilising these tools at ANSTO (neutron or X-ray facilities) and by using the Sydney node microscopy suite. This setup will also be used at Australian Synchrotron on the imaging and future engineering beamlines. a PhD in Engineering, Science, or a related discipline
experience with or knowledge of modern advanced manufacturing technology such as metal 3D printing techniques, welding and surface modifications
experience with or knowledge of diffraction-based techniques, such as neutron and synchrotron-based characterisation of materials
knowledge and experience in one or more of the following techniques: transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), atom probe tomography, and associated sample preparation techniques including focused ion beam (FIB) technology
high-level verbal and written communication skills, especially in scientific communication and the preparation of reports, which includes an ability to provide useful feedback on student manuscripts
a commitment to understand, appreciate and work within a national microscopy user facility as both a research services provider and a researcher
