The Animal Technicians will be based at the
Medical Engineering Research Facility
(MERF) at The Prince Charles Hospital.

The primary purpose of the positions is the
care and maintenance of all research animals
(with a focus on large animals, such as sheep
and pigs) in accordance with legislative
requirements and Standard Operating
Procedures (SOP), to compile accurate and
timely records, and to ensure optimum Animal
Welfare conditions at all times.

The roles provide care to animals as well as
guidance and technical support to investigators
and management. The positions require a high
level of independence and the incumbents are
required to exercise judgement and meet

The positions report to the Coordinator of the
MERF Biological Research Facility (BRF) for
supervision, workload management and for
Performance Planning and Review (PPR) and
will receive guidance from the MERF
veterinarians in animal care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responsibility for care of laboratory animals
within the facility. This includes
maintenance of health, animal welfare,
husbandry, record keeping, and monitoring
requirements in accordance with:
o MERF Standard Operating Procedures

o NHMRC Guidelines and Australian Code

of Practice for the Care and Use of
Animals for Scientific Purposes

o AS/NZS 2243.3:2010. Australian/New
Zealand Standard. Safety in
laboratories. Part 3: Microbiological
safety and containment

o QLD Animal Care and Protection Act
o QUT policies and procedures
o Office of the Gene Technology

Regulator (OGTR) requirements.
  • Report any issues to facility veterinarians

and researchers and ensure sick or injured
animals (under direction from veterinarians
and researchers) are treated.

  • Administer medications to animals as
instructed by a facility veterinarian and be
able to obtain a drug license (S8) from the
Queensland Department of Health to do so.
  • Operating theatre preparation, cleaning and
disposal of pathological waste and

completion of all appropriate

  • Assist with inductions and transport of
animals to and from QUT agistment
facilities with regular weighing,
identification/ear tagging procedures,
drenching, monitoring of venous blood gas
analysis (if required), Q fever testing,
preparation of animals for routine
euthanasia and recovery of post-mortem
  • Assist in the maintenance of facility
equipment and infrastructure as required.
  • Participate on the weekend/public holiday
  • Professional assistance with the provision
of educational workshops at the facility.
  • Compliance with health and safety policies,
procedures, hazard reporting and safe work

To ensure job flexibility the successful
appointee may be required to:

  • perform any other duties as nominated by

the University consistent with the relevant
classification descriptors detailed in the
Enterprise Agreement. Staff undertaking

consultation with their supervisor.

Type of appointment
This appointment will be offered on a fixed-
term, full-time basis for three (3) years.

Medical Engineering Research Facility (MERF)

Selection Criteria
1. Education, training and/or relevant

experience equivalent to completion of an
associate diploma level qualification in
Veterinary Technology or an equivalent
discipline, with relevant work experience.

2. Demonstrated experience working in an
animal research facility, including
experience in the care and husbandry of
laboratory animals and competency in
standard animal husbandry techniques and

3. Demonstrated ability to work independently
with minimal supervision, and to work
effectively as a team member to complete
work tasks.

4. Demonstrated ability to follow instructions,
work in a safe manner in association with
provided instruction and maintain records
with a high degree of accuracy.

5. Ability to meet the physical requirements of
the position (i.e., lift/move/carry weights of
up to 12kg on a regular basis and up to 25-
30kg occasionally).

6. Good written and oral communication and
organisational skills, with the capacity to
manage and prioritise tasks with competing

Remuneration and Benefits

The classification for this position is Higher
Education Worker Level 4 (HEW4) which has
an annual remuneration range of $73,283 to
$77,098 pa. Which is inclusive of an annual
salary range of $62,453 to $65,705 pa and
17% superannuation.

In July 2020 QUT staff voted in favour of a
variation to its Enterprise Agreements. The
variations were approved by the Fair Work
Commission in August 2020.

The variation impacts leave loading (for new
staff no loading will be paid or accrued during
the period the variation is in effect), salary
increases (the salary increase which was due
to occur in the first full pay period of December
2020 has been deferred until the first full pay
period of December 2021) and superannuation
(superannuation will be paid to staff as though
the salary increase which would have been
paid in December 2020 has taken effect and,
subject to the rules of the superannuation fund,
a defined benefit member will continue to make
contributions in alignment with the contributions

The persons are required to hold a current “C”
