The Garvan Institute is a leading multi-disciplinary biomedical research institute in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

The Opportunity
This role will be responsible for the ongoing configuration, customisation, support, and maintenance of several of Garvan's most complex, business critical 'off the shelf' applications. This includes change management, release management, configuration, security patching and general support and maintenance. The successful applicant will work on Workday, Salesforce, Intelledox Infiniti/SmartIQ, the Progeny Genetic pedigree software and Atlassian's Confluence and Jira amongst others.

An effective and agile application portfolio underpins Garvan's ability to deliver medical research outcomes. These complex applications span Finance, Human Resources, Procurement, project management, knowledge sharing, collaboration, research participant interaction and clinical studies.

This position is a permanent full-time role with a salary of $120,000, plus 10% superannuation and salary packaging benefits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working effectively and well with a range of stakeholders at Garvan, including senior research staff and Chief Operating Officer's Group members.
  • Understanding complex business processes, how they relate to the applications being managed, and devising appropriate changes to these processes and applications as necessary.
  • Become one of the "go-to" people for Workday, Salesforce, Progeny, Intelledox/Infiniti, Confluence and Jira within a short period of time.
  • Investigating and resolving issues within these complex applications
  • Understanding complex security models, why they exist, and how they can be changed and extended.
  • Maintaining end user satisfaction.
  • Working within Garvan IT's incident, problem, change and configuration management processes. Documenting and proposing improvements to these processes as needed.
  • Helping develop Garvan's Enterprise Application Release Management process, including Quality Assurance aspects.

About You


  • A degree in an IT related discipline or equivalent.
  • Experience in working with internal clients and stakeholders in assessing their needs and developing appropriate solutions
  • Ability to think ahead to where problems may arise in architecture
  • Experience in information systems design and deployment in medium to large organisations
  • Experience in working with clients, understanding their needs and developing systems
  • Experience working in teams using both Agile and waterfall development methodologies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Service oriented, "can-do" attitude


  • Previous Workday application management experience, particularly in HCM, or
  • Previous Salesforce application management experience

Highly Desirable:


  • Previous Workday application management experience, particularly in HCM, and
  • Previous Salesforce application management experience


  • Workday Report Writer and/or Studio
  • Familiarity with Atlassian toolsets
  • Some scripting and/or Python experience
  • JSON data exchange
