About The Role

Strategic Procurement's primary purpose is to deliver value by providing safe, efficient and effective procurement and in-bound supply chain services to UNSW faculties, businesses and divisions. Value is delivered through optimised commercial terms, pricing and supply security as well as through the establishment or improvement of competitive supply markets for the purchase of goods and services.

A key objective of Procurement is to, through category and sourcing strategies:
  • capture sustained and competitive value; and
  • manage reputational, legal, commercial and supply risks.

The Category Manager provides end-to-end category management for allocated categories/category. The role is responsible for developing and implementing category/sub-category management Strategies and leading high complexity strategic sourcing events to capture sustainable benefits for the University. The role reports to the Procurement Manager and has no direct reports

Specific Responsibilities Include
    • Develop and implement strategic category plans based on market research and whole-of-life cost analysis to optimise value for money outcomes.
    • Be recognised as a trusted commercial advisor and an expert in deriving value whilst meeting operational needs.
    • Demonstrate strong influencing capabilities in all interactions with internal and external stakeholders as well as collaborate with stakeholders at all levels (from the Board to Contract Managers) whilst managing competing stakeholder priorities.
    • Identify and manage commercial, contractual, operational, financial, reputational, ethical and supply chain risks.
    • Continually analyse, review and monitor total category/sub-category spend (strategic, tactical and operational) to ensure both short-term and long-term strategies are in place to maximise value (including but not limited to; enhance catalogue options, use of panel and supply agreements and long-term contract plans)
    • Optimise the supply base through leveraging (i.e. aggregations, consolidation, bundling, rationalising or re-engineering) solutions for key spend and categories.
    • Act as a business change driver to improve value, operational efficiency and productivity, applying appropriate tools and techniques as required.
    • Secure procurement benefits, identify future opportunities and develop a sourcing pipeline.
    • Manage the commercial business relationship with suppliers.
    • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.


About The Successful Applicant
  • You will develop and implement strategic category plans based on market research and whole-of-life cost analysis to optimise value for money outcomes.
  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Commerce or equivalent relevant knowledge gained in another discipline or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Advanced analytical expertise with robust critical reasoning.
  • You have demonstrated experience in strategic sourcing, category management and procurement.
  • You will have strong influencing, communication and negotiation skills.
  • Flexibility and creativity – you would have demonstrated ability to adopt new methods and process to deliver outcomes and meet the internal customer need, consistently challenge existing paradigms.
