Who we are
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences provides professionally independent, high quality research, analysis and advice to inform policy and decision-making by government and the private sector on significant issues affecting Australia's agriculture, food and fibre industries. ABARES has capabilities in multi-disciplinary research and analysis in the fields of economics, science and social science with application across agriculture, fisheries, forestry, food and water.

The Agricultural Forecasting & Trade Branch provides research, analysis and advice on agricultural commodities price and production status and outlook; agriculture adjustment and sector policy; trade and global markets; and emerging policy issues.

The ABARES Impact and Engagement Section supports ABARES' research activities through the provision of management and coordination services across project, program and resource management, major and regional events, corporate and business planning, communications and departmental library services.

The Job
ABARES is seeking a highly motivated person to provide a range of administrative services to support the business activities of the bureau. We are looking for an enthusiastic and engaged individual to work as a member of the Impact and Engagement team. The successful applicant should be organised, possess a well-developed understanding of financial management practices, and have a sound understanding of best practice governance arrangements and be able to apply this in the course of carrying out their duties.

As a member of the Impact and Engagement team, you will provide support across a range of areas including the following:
  • undertaking accounts payable and receivable transactions on behalf of ABARES
  • undertaking month-end reporting and forecasting
  • coordinating project and milestone payments across all activities of the division
  • providing support to program leads for the approval and submission of timesheets using TechnologyOne
  • assisting with the preparation of business documents and associated reporting to clients, stakeholders and the ABARES Executive
  • assisting in the development of divisional policies, procedures, and templates to enable appropriate financial and project governance and reporting within the division
Skills and Capabilities
This position will suit a highly motivated person who has the proven ability to:
  • use and interrogate TechnologyOne financial management system to support the project management activities of the division
  • provide support for budget and forecast activities for the division
  • contribute to the development of financial and project guidance and reporting
  • engage and communicate effectively with senior management, project managers and enabling divisions
  • contribute meaningfully to team priorities to deliver a broad range of services to the division within the context of a constantly changing environment, scope requirements and limited resources
  • develop and maintain relationships with people at all levels in the workplace
  • manage competing priorities, work to tight deadlines and demonstrate strong attention to detail
  • demonstrate strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Knowledge and experience
  • Experience in financial and business management activities together with strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience in accounting/finance administration is desirable
