Fixed term, 3 years full-time opportunity$124,033 - $165,983 plus superannuation Take a lead role in identifying and managing legislation and policy reform About usThe Aboriginal Justice group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to connect, support and deliver better outcomes for the Aboriginal community. The group works in partnership with Traditional Owners and the Victorian Aboriginal community to embed the principles of self-determination in the justice sector.The Yoo-rrook Commission Response team will lead the coordination of the department's responses to inquiries from the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission and will drive proactive and responsive legislative and system reform opportunities across the Justice and Community Safety sector, aligned to the Commission's mandate.About the roleReporting to the Director Yoo-rrook Commission Response, the Principal Legal Policy Officer, supported by one direct report, will take a lead role in identifying and managing legislation and policy reform opportunities within the context of the Commission's remit. As the Principal Legal Policy Officer, Legislation and Policy Reform you will:Lead, in collaboration with the Yoo-rrook Commission Response team, the development and management of aspects of the ongoing evolution of Victoria's policyto improve outcomes for Aboriginal people in contact with the justice system.Lead the Commission's policy and project work to address human rights, discrimination, racial, and religious vilification relating to land and the aboriginal community.Manage the preparation of Cabinet and Parliamentary documentation and the drafting of Ministerial and other correspondence for the Yoo-rrook Commission Response portfolio as required.Engage internal and external stakeholders to understand land justice issues to influence positive change and system reform.Monitor developments and trends within Australia and internationally to ensure that the unit is kept abreast of current issues in areas of Aboriginal and Indigenous truth-telling and where appropriate, inform executive management.This is an Aboriginal Identified Position.
