Black Milk Clothing is an Australian fashion label that produces unique and striking dresses, leggings, swimsuits, active wear and much more. As a virtually integrated business based in Banyo, we are able to deliver quick to market garments without compromising on design or quality. We are looking for a Design Director who will drive the overall design strategy for the brand and lead the design teams in the development of themed collections in line with the long term brand strategy. We are a fun brand with a strong personality and team who are super passionate about what we do. For this role you will need to have the ability to really get into the DNA of an established brand to help drive it forward with the support of an experienced team. Your ability to bring your creativity, leadership skills and adaptability to this role will be critical.


On a daily basis you will:

  • Lead strategy and execute the development of our product design
  • Contribute to the development of the long term brand strategy
  • Collaborate with the Founder on collection themes ensuring they are relevant to the market, brand and customer
  • Conduct seasonal trend forecasting and in collaboration with the Founder, selecting key trends that are relevant to our brand strategy and work with the Product & Planning Director to incorporate these into the range plans
  • Provide fabric and trim development/purchasing direction in line with the critical path in collaboration with the Senior Designer
  • Present key trends to the Design and Merchandise teams ensuring the teams understand the key elements to incorporate into our upcoming ranges and how to deliver in a way that is unique to our brand
  • Ensure storytelling is a key element in the development and presentation of our ranges
  • Seek to innovate and drive the brand forward
  • Contribute to the range build workshops advocating for products that support the development of the brand
  • Seek continuous improvement in our processes to ensure we remain efficient and support the team to deliver
  • Manage and support the team to deliver to the critical path timelines
  • Lead, manage and inspire a talented team of Designers ensuring their ongoing growth and professional development
  • Brief, and support the Graphics Team Leader in the allocation of work to Graphic Designers 
  • Support the design process with the Graphic Designers providing timely feedback on submission of artwork and styles
  • Support the Senior Designer in providing range creative direction to the Graphic Designers for collections as required
  • Together with the Product & Planning Director, present the Collection/Range to Marketing, providing enough information and direction to support the campaigning of products
  • Manage the allocated budget ensuring decisions are disciplined and fiscally responsible
  • Ensure work carried out by the design team is commercially viable and aesthetically aligned with the company strategy and vision for the brand 
  • Ensure technical artwork and/or printing issues are managed quickly and efficiently within the team minimising wastage
  • Ensure the design team’s input into tech packs is accurate and thorough for onshore and offshore production
  • Attend and contribute to fittings to ensure all products are executed to meet conceptual aesthetic, functional and fit intent
  • Manage the team’s adherence to internal fit policy


To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Proven leadership experience providing creative direction
  • Solid womenswear design experience
  • Experience in yardage and placement print design
  • Previous experience in developing ranges with strong product storytelling, highly desirable
  • Innovative and forward thinking
  • Ability to identify and translate key trends relevant for brand aesthetic 
  • Strong communication, influence, persuasion and collaboration skills
  • Experience working cross-functionally to deliver financial results
  • Proactive and inspiring leader who has the ability to inspire and motivate creatives in a deadline driven commercial environment
  • Ability to foster a team environment fuelled by creative energy
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Deeply passionate about the design and development of womenswear
