The Royal Melbourne Hospital

We are a designated state-wide provider for services including trauma, and we lead centres of excellence for tertiary services in several key specialties including neurosciences, nephrology, oncology, cardiology and virtual health.

Your new team
  • The Sunshine Adult Acute Psychiatric Unit (SAAPU) is a 29 bed acute mental health acute hospital program based at Sunshine Hospital, and is the inpatient service of Midwest Area Mental Health Service.
  • SAAPU is a large diverse interdisciplinary team comprising medical, nursing, social work, occupational therapy, nursing, and lived experience peer staff.
  • The team works closely together in partnership with consumers and their families to provide treatment and interventions when consumers are experiencing an acute deterioration in their mental health and related distress; and to support the consumer’s recovery.
  • The peer team based at SAAPU comprises 6 consumer peer support workers and 2 carer peer workers, providing 130hrs peer support per week across business hours, 7 days a week.
Your success in this role, will be in your ability to
  • Provide leadership to the MWAMHS peer support team based at SAAPU.
  • Be present, available, and work alongside lived experience colleagues, and provide support through individual and group co-reflection and day to day problem solving.
  • Effectively communicate with complex mental health consumers and their families and carers.
  • Promote lived experience work in clinical services through coordination of education and contribution to interdisciplinary local safety and quality initiatives.
  • Prioritise tasks in a busy clinical environment.
  • Efficiently manage reporting and data entry systems essential to record and evaluate consumer and carer peer work provided by the peer team.
Your Contribution
  • You have a personal lived experience as a consumer of mental health services or a as a family/carer of a consumer of mental health services.
  • You have a minimum 5 years’ experience working within a health/community service or related field and experience in these settings in a leadership position e.g. team leader/coordinator/consultant.
  • You have experience providing practice supervision, and professional development and wellbeing support within a team.
  • You have highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal) to consult, liaise, negotiate and work collaboratively with consumers, their families/carers, staff and other service providers.
  • You have previous experience in using a range of electronic applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel or as relevant to role).
  • Skill in working with cultural and linguistically diverse communities.

Essential: Are you proficiency in a range of electronic applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel or as relevant to role), and the capacity to quickly acquire skills in the service applications (not limited to BossNet, CMI, RosterOn etc)?
Essential: Do you hold a current unrestricted drivers licence?
Desirable: Do you hold formal qualifications in Mental Health and/or Peer Work?
Desirable: Have you had training in the Intentional Peer Support (IPS) model?
