Family / Carer Peer Support Worker

We are excited to be recruiting to our established peer support workgroup at Northern Hospital Adult Acute Psychiatric Units (Ward 7 AND Ward 8).

A combination of short evening shifts and weekend shifts up to 32hrs a fortnight (evenings and weekends)

As one of the largest health services in Victoria, and a team of more than 10,000 strong, we provide a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical, and mental health services; as well as rehabilitation, aged care, outpatient and community programs. We are a designated state-wide provider for services including trauma, and we lead centres of excellence for tertiary services in several key specialties including neurosciences, nephrology, oncology, cardiology and virtual health.

Your new team

These positions works alongside existing PSW and Peer Coordinator.

The PSW and the Peer Coordinator work alongside the broader interdisciplinary team (occupational therapists, social workers, nurses, doctors, psychologists, allied health assistants etc.) as well as a range of support staff.

Your success in this role, will be in your ability to

Provide peer support and information to families / carers of the consumers currently in the adult acute inpatient unit. The work will focus on support for families / carers during the consumers admission and for a small number for a short period following the consumers discharge from the acute inpatient unit to a range of other supports in the community.

Be part of a dynamic work group of PSW, Peer Coordinators and broader team including clinical and support staff.

Be active collaborators in developing, reviewing and providing information resources for consumers and their families and carers

Work independantly out of hours to support our carers who visit during this time.

Your Contribution

A lived / living experience of supporting a person with mental ill-health and treatment within a mental health service

Ability to draw on your own lived / living experience in working alongside consumers

Awareness of, and commitment to, your wellbeing and self-care as it relates to your work

Strong interpersonal skills

Empathic and compassionate approach

Understanding of peer support and recovery principle

Ability to work independently in an organised manner and collectively alongside your peer support work group.
