The Opportunity

VIRGo conducts community-based research in vaccine preventable diseases, especially clinical trials of new vaccines, and epidemiologic research related to the intended and unintended effects of vaccines. Our results provide policy support regarding the best use of vaccines in national schedules, in pandemic influenza preparedness, and in vaccine safety. Vaccine clinical trials exploring effectiveness (disease prevention), antibody responses, and safety of new vaccines in standard or novel schedules.

As a Casual Research Assistant you will be responsible in ensuring, the storage, distribution, accountability and temperature monitoring of Investigational Product (IP)/Vaccines from its arrival at VIRGo, to its return to the Sponsor at the conclusion of a trial and co-ordinating with the Lab the Laboratory processing and storage and shipment of blood samples. In blinded studies being responsible for overseeing all unblinded activities.

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Receipt of IP/vaccines from the Sponsor, ensuring delivery is correct and all documentation is completed and filed
Maintenance and temperature monitoring of cold chain throughout the unused life of all IP/vaccines, through dispatch from VIRGo, delivery to study doctors and return to VIRGo
Delivery and pick-up of IP/and associated documentation from study doctors, ensuring all IP/vaccines and paperwork is accounted for at all times.
Ensuring all relevant staff are aware of and are following appropriate procedures for handling vaccines and blood specimens.
Maintenance of vaccine accountability paperwork/database and storage of used IP/vaccines at RCH/VIRGo and ensure reconciliation and destruction of IP/vaccines when required.
Maintenance of temperature monitoring paperwork for all IP/vaccines storage facilities, including doctor's fridges and RCH Pharmacy/VIRG storage fridges.
Upkeep and annual calibration of IP/vaccines storage fridges and temperature recording data loggers.
Liaison with sponsor representatives in maintaining adequate stocks of IP/vaccines, ancillary supplies and associated paperwork for each trial.
Transport and processing of blood samples in the core laboratory at RCH or Melbourne Health.
Liaising with the Sponsor and overseeing the shipment of samples to the Sponsor’s Laboratory
Maintaining responsibility for archiving on-site and off-site of clinical trial documentation.
Understands and follows field work guidelines GCP / ICH.

You Demonstrate:
Degree/Honours/Masters qualification in Science or related discipline
Appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Excellent time management, organisational and analytical problem-solving skills
Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets, database programs, statistics and word processing.
Demonstrated understanding of a range of research methodologies and their application in empirical research.
Attention to detail in both documentation and IP/vaccines distribution.
Flexibility in time management and availability outside normal working hours.
Knowledge of and close attention to cold chain management.
A current and valid motor vehicle driver’s licence and access to a road worthy motor vehicle.

Salary Range $50.62 per hour (Including casual loading) + superannuation contributions
