JOB DESCRIPTION

The objective of the Head of Alliances is to develop a long term alliances and partnerships strategy and nurture a strong portfolio of partners, ranging from geographical network extensions to fully integrated risk sharing joint venture partnerships.


The Alliances team is responsible for leading our partnerships strategy, relationship management and commercial delivery. This strategic function enables an extended global reach for our customers and plays a key role in profit generation and customer loyalty. In this role, you will report to the General Manager of Network and Alliances and have extensive involvement with the executive leadership team. This is an important leadership role and success will be determined by your ability to lead and inspire a team, while also directly driving discreet pieces of high profile work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop an alliances strategy and long term road map that will attract increased profitability, network extension and guest loyalty, leveraging the bench strength of existing relationships in planning for the future
  • Explore the broad range of partnerships value drivers and lead the organisation through solution design & decision making
  • Structure new & existing relationship constructs in a way that aligns with the group strategy, including creative approaches to maximising value to our guests
  • Manage joint venture partnerships, codeshare, interline, capacity hire, as well as additional non-customer facing aspects partner relationships
  • Lead negotiation delegations with external partners, while also managing complex cross functional relationships and interdependencies within Virgin Australia
  • Negotiate and influence for favourable terms and conditions for Virgin Australia and its guests, leveraging deep understanding of the key value drivers to enable informed trade-off decisions
  • Nurture partnerships, continually maintaining high functioning relationships with partners that deliver positive outcomes for both parties

What we're looking for:

You will bring 10+ years of experience in one or more airline strategic planning functions and be highly motivated by managing multi-dimensional challenges in a decision making and negotiations context.

  • Experience in an airline strategic planning function, such as Strategy, Alliances, Network Planning, Finance or Revenue Management
  • Alliance and Joint Venture Partnerships experience
  • Supporting technology solutions
  • Management consulting
  • Complex financial modelling in a consumer business
  • Commercial astuteness
