An opportunity exists for a Senior Economist to join the Intergovernmental team during a high-profile time in Victoria’s economic recovery

About us

The Department of Treasury and Finance provides economic, financial and resource management advice to help the Victorian Government deliver its policies. We strive for excellence in financial and economic management to improve the lives of all Victorians.

The Intergovernmental Relations team manages DTF's contribution to Commonwealth‑state relations and provides advice on Commonwealth revenue streams including the GST. The team also undertakes research on the distribution of GST and contributes to Revenue Group's research program.

About the role

An opportunity exists for a Senior Economist to join the Intergovernmental team during a high-profile time in Victoria's economic recovery. Reporting to the Senior Economist, you will:

  • Provide analysis and advice to Government on the Commonwealth Grants Commission's method that determines the distribution of GST
  • Use and manage the department's GST modelling framework, with the opportunity to lead technical improvements and innovation
  • Generate influential economic policy advice and innovative economic research
  • Contribute to DTF's engagement with the Commonwealth Grants Commission, including on annual updates and methodology reviews
  • Contribute to DTF's engagement with the Commonwealth and other states regarding intergovernmental financial relations
  • Deliver research outcomes and prepare quantitative analysis assessing emerging short, medium and long-term economic challenges facing Victoria

About you

To be considered for this role, you must demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent economic policy analysis and analytical ability
  • Experience using quantitative tools to analyse and advise on economic policy problems, including building and using economic and econometric models, preparing forecasts and analysing large and complex datasets
  • Strong negotiation, oral and written communication skills
  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in economics, econometrics, statistics, public policy, finance or a related field
  • Experience in coding or using statistical software, including Stata, Python or R to analyse complex datasets and automate processes, is desired but not essential
