Principal Software Engineer - Host Networking

We are looking for a Linux Kernel Engineer with experience in developing network applications for the host networking team at Fastly! We have a large network of servers handling millions of requests per second taking advantage of commodity hardware. Host networking team is responsible for building and maintaining the data plane applications and services of Fastly caches’ network stack. You will collaborate closely with the network control and observability team in building new traffic engineering capabilities to improve the efficiency and operability of the network and caches. We enhance and optimize the use of network and transport layer services by Fastly applications.

What Youll Do

  • Be a part of the team building a modern host networking stack that efficiently moves traffic between applications, between servers, and between PoPs
  • Guide application developers make best use of host networking capabilities
  • Optimize existing applications’ performance
  • Help maintain any kernel feature enhancements, periodically rebase on upstream, automate testing and run regression tests
  • Contribute kernel patches to upstream
  • Drive innovation on the team and mentor peers to improve skill sets
  • Learn and share new tools and techniques to get a job done with maximum efficiency

What Were Looking For

  • Both high and low level understanding of Linux/UNIX systems, especially advanced Linux networking concepts such as routing, iptables, netlink, eBPF, XDP, and/or kernel bypass technologies
  • Expert level knowledge of Networking, Routing, and Traffic Engineering
  • Familiarity with web protocols - HTTP, HTTPS, HTTP/2, QUIC+HTTP/3, DNS
  • Ability to work with stakeholders within engineering, operations, security, and product
  • Strong proficiency in C and comfort with x86 architecture
  • Experience running, supporting, and using high availability systems and infrastructure
  • Willingness to learn and tenacity (we have tracked down CPU bugs!)
  • An eye for correctness and performance, in that order
