JOB DESCRIPTION

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 400 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.

Join the OPP as a Senior Solicitor

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) has an exciting opportunity for experienced solicitors to join our Trial Divisions (Ongoing and Fixed Term) and Advocacy team (Fixed Term – up to 12 months). 

As a Senior Solicitor at the OPP you will have the opportunity to exercise previously acquired legal practice skills in the preparation and conduct of criminal litigation, with an emphasis on victim engagement.

About the Role

- Prepare, appear and instruct in complex matters, including major trials and taskforce investigations

- Manage and maintain a large caseload of complex files with minimal supervision.

- Engage and support victims and witness' of crime in line with our victim and witness engagement strategy

- Assist in the informal and formal mentoring of junior staff

As our ideal candidate you will:

- Demonstrate leadership skills and ability to mentor junior staff

- Have exceptional interpersonal and communications skills with the ability liaise with external stakeholders including victims and witnesses, police informants

The position is based in Melbourne however, regional travel (under supervision) is a requirement of the position. A vehicle and overnight accommodation are provided as required.
