Overview of the work area and position

The Emergency Department at Canberra Hospital sees over 90 000 patients per annum. In such a busy department, the administrative team provides support to medical, nursing and allied health staff. Within the Emergency Medicine Unit (EMU), the Billing Officer is responsible for patient admissions and administrative support to the staff in that area.

Eligibility/Other Requirements

  • The successful applicant will need to be available for weekend and after-hours work.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Standards and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this role as detailed in the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

This is a part-time permanent position available at 28 hours per week and the full-time salary noted above will be paid pro-rata.


Under limited direction of the Administration Manager you will perform billing officer duties within the Emergency Department’s ‘Emergency Medicine Unit (EMU)’. You will work with our patients to complete admission paperwork relevant to their stay. You will:
  • Provide information to patients, families and carers on their admissions options for Canberra Hospital.
  • Assist the Emergency Department with the generation of revenue for the Emergency Medicine Unit (EMU) and Canberra Health Services inpatient services.
  • Coordinate and maintain appropriate financial management records on behalf of Canberra Health Services.
  • Liaise with Canberra Hospital Admissions Officer regarding the generation of revenue for private health fund patients and compensable patients.
  • Participate in the administrative activities within the Emergency Department such as patient registration, bed management, discharge of patients and the coordination of medical records within a discreet unit to achieve the provision of high quality customer service (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
  • Examine and direct incoming correspondence and telephone enquiries for the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Emergency Department with general administrative tasks as directed ensuring that communication is maintained.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

3. Demonstrated high level organisational skills including the ability to exercise initiative, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines within a complex and multi-disciplinary work environment.
4. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in using computer software applications including CHS information management systems, and Microsoft Office programs.
5. Demonstrates a commitment to Work, Health and Safety (WHS) and the positive patient experience and displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of Reliable, Progressive, Respectful and Kind.
