Purpose of Role

The primary purpose of this role is to meet production and profitability targets for the Chubb Masterpiece product by managing a team who will underwrite new and existing Chubb Masterpiece business, based on underwriting criteria issued by International Personal Lines and local underwriting guidelines. This will include product training, completing referrals for new and existing opportunities, working with the Business Manager PRS and underwriting manager to implement underwriting strategy, conducting underwriting peer reviews, review of marketing materials from an underwriting perspective and contributing to the maintenance of underwriting and portfolio management tools.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
Major duties/responsibilities are detailed in the individual’s annual goals. These goals may include items such as:

Underwriting Quality

  • Ensure team properly evaluates, accept or decline all new, endorsement or renewal business based on underwriting guidelines
  • Ensure team collates underwriting information and refer risks outside the scope of authority issued and be a referral point for those instances
  • Evaluate referrals from Underwriters, providing feedback where appropriate in the form of guidance and tutoring
  • Ensure profitability and growth of portfolio by ensuring quality of all risks written by the team
  • Actively drive New Business through disciplined underwriting and leadership.
Service Delivery and Quality Assurance
  • Monitor work loads and advise if assistance is required due to exceptional circumstances, i.e. seasonal business loads or personal vacation
  • Ensure service KPI’s for the team are maintained and adhered to and identify any gaps in service and work with Business Manager PRS to find solutions
  • Ensure quality for all aspects of service and documentation for the team are maintained and adhered to and identify any gaps and work with Business Manager PRS to find solutions
  • Establish and build professional long-term working relationships with all producers you are allocated and refer to sales leads who have prospective business that meets our underwriting guidelines.
Operational Efficiency / Process Improvement
  • Work with Business Manager and Operations and Technology Manager to ensure process and procedures are continually challenged and looked at to identify improvements and to ensure that process improvement benefits are executed well and benefits realised.
People Management and Leadership
  • Conduct performance appraisals and salary reviews with direct reports
  • Manage underwriters to grow and profitable portfolio and ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines.
  • Manage staff effectively to ensure that service and quality standards are being maintained
  • Identify and provide training to staff to ensure service and quality standards are adequately maintained
  • Through Coaching ensure a high performance culture exists
  • Work with team resources (Business Manager, Underwriting manager, Operations and Technology Manager to monitor, maintain and improve underwriting processes and systems.
Collaboration
  • Assist colleagues and Managers with product and business queries
  • Undertake practical measures to ensure that the workplace is safe and without risk to health
  • If and when required assist in coordinating producer functions
  • Assist in general department matters when required
  • Work with staff members in other departments to identify cross marketing opportunities as and when required
Qualifications

Skills & Experience
To be successful in this role, you will need:

Essential:
  • Demonstrable strong underwriting knowledge and skills, particularly in relation to: policy documentation and policy practice
  • Process flow – ability to review processes and procedures and work with team resources to implement improvements and efficiencies
  • Portfolio Management –understanding of how decisions may impact performance
  • Analytics – identifying trends and developing appropriate solutions
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong negotiation and marketing skills, with the ability to build and maintain stakeholder relationships that facilitate the support and leverage of new business opportunities
  • Confidence and literacy in the usage of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint packages and ability to gain proficiency in external systems including Sunrise
  • Comprehensive and demonstrable knowledge of the Personal Lines Product range
  • Very good understanding of the Personal Lines underwriting appetite
  • Very good understanding of Insurance industry and Chubb’s position in the market
