In this role you’ll be part of a Branch who’s mission it is to take the pulse of our air, water and aquatic ecosystems to inform decision-making for a healthier Queensland.
This exciting opportunity is for a technical officer to join the Estuarine and Marine team who provide advice and undertake projects for clients in the field of water quality and aquatic ecosystem health. The role is instrumental in the technical development and implementation of specialist water quality, environmental research and monitoring programs and will ideally suit those candidates who not only enjoy vessel based field work, but also thrive in a laboratory setting. Your demonstrated ability in contemporary laboratory practices, including sample collection, storage, analysis and data interpretation will be as critical to your success in this role as your shipboard and field skills.

The Technical Officer, (TO2) is a role in which you will:

  • Assist in the technical development and implementation of specialist water quality and environmental research and monitoring programs.
  • Undertake estuarine and marine water quality surveys and environmental field studies including the operation, maintenance and proper stowage of field and laboratory equipment, and the collection of data, observations, samples and specimens as required.
  • Assist with the provision of technical advice and training for regional DES staff, the general public and local organisations interested in water quality monitoring, seagrass surveys and broader aquatic ecosystem health monitoring, particularly in terms of the use and maintenance of monitoring equipment, collection and storage of samples and specimens, storage and analysis of field and laboratory data, quality assurance procedures, and workplace health and safety procedures.
  • Operate marine vessels and towing vehicles and associated equipment in accordance with accepted practices, procedures and standards, and assisting with the supervision of maintenance, servicing and calibration of equipment, and ensuring the cleanliness and safety of field and laboratory facilities in accordance with established standards. This is a hands on position and the suitable candidate will be ready and willing to complete any and all vessel related maintenance like replacing wheel bearings, vessel safety checks including workshop related maintenance tasks.
