Summary

We’re an experienced, friendly team, and we’re particularly proud of the work we’re producing to support our healthcare startups, https://cubcare.com.au/ and https://gpconsults.com.au. They’re interesting systems from a technical perspective, but the kind feedback from the families and clinicians we’ve been able to help is what continues to ensure a rewarding experience for our team.


March has been another strong month for our business, seeing many prospective clients and healthcare partners now ready to commit to projects that had previously been on pause during the pandemic.


Over the last few weeks, we’ve successfully placed candidates into some exciting new roles for our team, bringing more data-science and machine-learning skills in-house, and expanding the marketing and business-development activities of both Stacktrace and our healthcare startups. 


In our recent role description for design-oriented development, we touched on a trend we’ve observed where projects have started to require substantially more UI effort vs API/Infrastructure. We’ve seen that trend continue - particularly as we’ve since won two new react-native projects - which gave us the confidence to take on a couple of promising candidates earlier in their development careers, rather than our usual profile of full-stack/polyglot seniors.


Now it’s time for us to expand our core, full-stack engineering capacity, to help us meet the higher demand we’re experiencing. We’re open to hiring a senior engineer immediately, and we have every expectation that we will be open to more if this level of growth continues.

We’re hoping that candidates who apply for this role will be comfortable anchoring a complex service-engagement from inception through delivery, and excited by the opportunity to provide great technical mentoring and support to the new folks on our team who mightn’t call themselves full-stack developers quite yet. 


Given the healthcare emphasis in our startups/products, we’re successfully carving out a niche for ourselves providing custom development for the local healthcare industry. Some of our upcoming projects are small, designed to support clinical trials, or to test novel processes inside traditional models of care. Others are more expansive, including direct-to-consumer transformations for large multi-nationals who have traditionally operated in a B2B model, or projects designed to bring consumer-first healthcare experiences (like those we provide through Cub Care) into new specialties and larger organisations.


We’re looking for people who are excited about delivering great outcomes to our consulting customers right across that spectrum.


We don’t have fixed salaries in mind for the role. We’d prefer to be flexible, listen to the experience and salary requirements of any candidates who are interested, and ultimately negotiate a fair salary with anyone to whom we extend an offer.

Our Company and Projects

At Stacktrace, our time is split roughly evenly across two streams of work:

  • Supporting our healthcare startups: Cub Care (https://cubcare.com.au) and GP Consults (https://gpconsults.com.au), and
  • Software development for paying customers (aka Consulting Projects/Services).


We’ve delivered consulting projects across a range of scales and industries, but a “typical” engagement for us is a greenfield system requiring 2 or 3 developers over an initial MVP build lasting a couple of months, followed by ongoing support while a customer grows and collects feedback from the market. On the larger end, we supplied 8 engineers for a continuous 26 months, and on the smaller end we might recommend a particular off-the-shelf product for a startup, then build just enough software to help integrate it into their processes and align it with their brand.


Most engineers at Stacktrace could reasonably describe themselves as “senior generalists”, happy to move between languages, frameworks and coding styles as best suits the customer and their system(s), across client-side, server-side and infrastructure code.


It’s not unusual for one of our engineers to write Terraform one week, then the following week participate in a design sprint with a customer before creating a prototype in Figma. We fundamentally believe that the user experience of the software we create is everyone’s responsibility, so we do our best to get engineers in front of the people a system is designed to help, exposed to as much context as possible, throughout the lifecycle of the system.


When it’s time to build out a UI, we most commonly reach for Typescript/React/Tailwind CSS for consulting projects, or Elm/Tailwind for our healthcare startups. APIs are generally C#/ASP.NET Core for consulting projects, and F# for our healthcare systems, with Python for any data-science or ML work.

We’re a young company (we opened our doors in April 2018) doing our best to distil lessons from our previous systems, projects and cultures into a work environment which we find deeply satisfying, and which enables us to produce the best work of our lives.


You’ll find a mix of startup-culture here (radical transparency, light-touch business processes, an immersion-circulator in the kitchen) balanced by the maturity that comes from having “been around the block”, working in a world of enterprise-level compliance objectives and maintaining availability for consumer-facing platforms.


We’re fortunate to have a diverse team who are passionate about both learning and teaching, and about making important decisions together in a collaborative, transparent manner.


In-Person vs Remote Work

Pre-COVID, we were already very much a “remote-friendly” company, with 2 or 3 team members working from home on any given day. In March 2020 we moved to working exclusively remotely, but we returned to a new office in March 2021. 


Our new office is in Milton, overlooking the river. We have plentiful plants, snacks and boardgames. Roughly half the team work together in-peron on any given day, and most of the team come in for social events. End of trip facilities are available - many of us enjoy cycling to work.

Your experience

Mandatory

  • 4+ years of experience writing software professionally using modern web technologies 
  • Significant experience with multi-year, in-market product development
  • Experience across a variety of UI technologies, preferably involving Typescript or another statically-typed compile-to-js language
  • Experience across a variety of server-side technologies, including ASP.NET
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills


Beneficial 

  • Experience in a client-facing role, particularly during the project inception/discovery/solution-design phases.
  • React-Native or Native mobile application development experience
  • An appreciation for functional programming and Domain-Driven Design
  • Experience with cloud computing services (AWS or Azure)


Your responsibilities

  • You’ll work and code alongside our existing Brisbane-based team, developing new UIs and services as required to introduce new and exciting features.
  • You’ll be in a customer facing role, either working as a consultant to understand our customer’s needs and deliver value to them via software and business development, or doing the same for our products and their users.
  • You’ll likely start on a long term client’s project in the eCommerce space. However, you will need the ability to shift onto other internal or external projects with different technical requirements in the medium term.
  • You’ll contribute to operational aspects of our new systems:
  • We built it, so we run it
  • You’ll work closely with our product-planning processes:
  • To align your own work-stream to best support the goals of the wider business
  • To create and prioritize backlog items for others that will help us make progress towards our common vision
