We are in search of a polyglot Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our Engineering team, reporting to the Engineering Manager. This role is for the curious, problem solving, lifelong learner who is comfortable in and has a passion for the entire delivery lifecycle.

As a Backend Software Engineer, apart from maintaining and enriching the current backend and APIs, you will also play an important role in the set-up of our new infrastructure and robust DevOps processes to support Teach Starter’s strategy and rapid growth. If you love working on backend APIs and have a passion for globally distributed, highly available infrastructures (as code!), all while building a product you believe in, then we’d love to speak with you.

  • Collaborate with a small and nimble team of Brisbane-based engineers, developing and maintaining the backend infrastructure and APIs that power the Teach Starter platform using languages and technologies such as PHP, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, nginx, and many more.
  • Contribute to and further enhance the backend APIs (PHP), while actively collaborating with frontend counterparts who will be the consumers of the APIs.
  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of Teach Starter’s development and coding standards to ensure that the deployed code is reliable, secure, and maintainable.
  • Take part in code reviews and share knowledge with the rest of the team to support an environment of continuous learning.
  • Be mindful of new tools, technologies, and frameworks to help scale our stack and help us achieve our goals more efficiently.

  • Developed skills with a wide range of programming languages and frameworks, including PHP (which is what our existing code is mostly in), and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases such as MySQL and MongoDB.
  • Commercial experience developing complex web applications.
  • Commercial experience working with cloud providers such as AWS or GCP.
  • Production experience in Docker and Kubernetes (or similar).
  • DevOps experience in writing Infrastructure as Code, using tools like Terraform.
  • Experience in debugging of issues, identification of faults, and implementation of monitoring and alerting systems.
