Are you interested in supporting people held in custody in correctional centres throughout Queensland?

QCS is seeking people to take up the role of Official Visitor to support prisoners throughout the state.

There are 28 vacancies across the state, and there are three types of OV roles - Legal (5 vacancies), Community (12 vacancies) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (11 vacancies).

This advertisement is for the role of OV- Community, however QCS recognise that a person may fall into two or more of the categories of OV role and encourage people to consider submitting an application for other OV roles that they may qualify for.

The 12 OV-Community roles are located at Rockhampton, Atherton Tablelands/Cairns, Greater Brisbane, South-East Queensland and Townsville/North Queensland.

In this role you will:

-Visit the correctional centre on a monthly basis.

- Provide independent and impartial support to people in custody.

- Liaise and engage with prisoners to discuss concerns and issues that prisoners are experiencing.

- Investigate complaints made by prisoners, by liaising with correctional centre staff and management.

- Interact with correctional centre staff and management, to resolve complaints, issues and concerns of prisoners.

-Prepare brief reports to the State Coordinator.

The skills required for the role are:

- good communication skills and ability to talk to prisoners and correctional centre managers and staff

- good written skills to prepare brief summaries and reports

- empathy, impartiality and unbiased approach

- ability to read and understand correctional centre procedures

- ability to travel to correctional centres to perform visits and interviews.

Eligibility criteria:

- To ensure the independence of the position, employees of Queensland Corrective Services or the Public Service are not eligible for appointment.
