This is an Identified position in line with the Department's Aboriginal Recruitment and Career Development Strategy. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.

The position of Senior Research and Policy Officer forms a part of the Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) branch of the Employment and Inclusion group. AED leads work across the Department to support Aboriginal self-determination through employment and economic development. To this end, it is tasked with the redevelopment of the new Victorian Aboriginal Employment and Economic Strategy.

Reporting to the Manager - Aboriginal Economic Development and Industry Engagement, this role is responsible for providing authoritative policy advice based on robust research to strengthen Aboriginal economic development and industry engagement. The position will contribute to the development and implementation of the new Victorian Aboriginal Employment and Economic Strategy (VAEES) which will identify economic development opportunities with a range of Aboriginal interest groups, government stakeholders and key industry groups. Working across the regions, with Traditional Owner groups and Treaty related structures (when developed), the position will provide strategic and policy advice to the Department to harness the State's levers to drive economic development, participation and prosperity for the Victorian Aboriginal community.

Key accountabilities:
  • Provide authoritative policy advice and delivery of key projects to the Aboriginal Economic Development team, Council and its working groups and to support program and policy development contributing to the new Victorian Aboriginal Employment and Economic Strategy.
  • Develop responsive research, policy programs and promote opportunities through linkages and partnerships with Aboriginal communities, government, private sector and industry groups to maximise Aboriginal economic development and industry engagement outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain highly effective collaborative working relationships across the Branch, sectors, portfolios, government (including local, state and Commonwealth) and Aboriginal stakeholder groups to strategically connect research and policy to support Aboriginal economic development opportunities.
You will have the opportunity to use your demonstrated specialist knowledge and experience in working with the Victorian Koori community and understanding of labour and economic markets and challenges, the impacting issues on society and culture, especially in relation to supporting economic development opportunities and industry engagement and ability to innovate in order to create opportunities for the Victorian Aboriginal community.
