  • 0.8FTE, 2.5 years fixed-term contract based at RMIT City campus but to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University
  • Key position in a new Smartsat CRC Project real time fire analytics. This project proposes a satellite system of systems encompassing geostationary, polar orbiting and aerial based sensors for real time fire attribution
  • Opportunity for an experienced researcher to design and deliver a data and platform ecosystem to allow autonomous real time information on fire to be detected, processed and delivered to end users
  • Report directly to Professor Jones, Geospatial Science
  • Remuneration at Academic Level C1 ($120,657 pro rata) + 17% superannuation

About You and the Role
  • Design and deliver competitive research & development which includes delivering a data and platform ecosystem to will enable fire surveillance in real time from geostationary, polar-orbiting and aerial platformed sensors;
  • Create and produce fire detection algorithms for the real time surveillance of fires and their attribution (e.g. FRP, burn persistence, rate of spread etc.);
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively with the broader fire analytics research group through data sharing contributing to high-quality research outcomes and developing new research initiatives, as well as delivery of high-quality publications and conference attendance;
Qualifications

Mandatory: PhD in satellite earth observation / data assimilation.

Preferred:
  • Expertise in research programming i.e. Python, R, GEE) and capability to translate into utilisation contexts
  • Emerging track record and evidence of publications in high quality journals and ability to draft and execute research plan and grant proposals are required;
  • Research experience in high performance cloud computing environments for processing large datasets;
  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on expertise in satellite image integration and processing, ideally for fire-related applications;
  • Ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates.
Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children check.
