The Role
The Major Surface Ships (MSS) Projects Manager, within MSS Branch, will be required to perform a range of duties and manage an integrated team to govern and assure the delivery of Defence capability. Key duties will include commercial/contract functions, scheduling, budget management and performing management responsibilities aligned with the CASG Project Management function.
Within the Project Management function an APS6 Project Manager is accountable to ensure they have knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.

An APS6 Project Manager will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work. They will exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. They will provide detailed project management technical, professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.

The Maritime Systems Division (MSD) within the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) provides through-life asset management to support Royal Australian Navy capability. Our vision is to have balanced, effective and affordable capability and availability across every class. The Directorate of Major Surface Ships Projects (DMSSP) supports the MSD vision by ensuring new capability is being set up for efficient and effective transition into service and ongoing sustainment success.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will come from a project controls background who wishes to transition into project management. You will have experience in scheduling, cost control, risk management and awareness of commercial/contract functions.

Experience within defence is ideal, however experience working in an owner/client organisation in other industries, where there has been direct oversight of prime contractors will be considered.

The ideal candidate will have project management qualifications from a recognised institution.

Duties, skills and attributes for this role include:

  • Experience in schedule management including baselines, rolling wave planning and managing an integrated master schedule with the prime contractor
  • Experience in cost control, budgeting and forecasting in accordance with defence policies
  • Project risk management and working with project stakeholders and others from outside the organisation to manage risks
  • Demonstrated experience of working closely with a prime contractor in a collaborative and transparent approach
  • Excellent document writing skills
  • Initiative and experience to research, analyse, plan, review and adjust priorities and work activities to meet business outcomes
  • Capability of strengthening a team’s performance through coaching, feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work unit; and
  • Experience with Power BI reporting is preferred
