Mater Health Services have an extraordinary opportunity available for a professional and experienced Senior Medical Officer to lead the Epilepsy Unit, as the Director of Epilepsy Unit. This role is offered on a permanent full time basis based at South Brisbane.

Mater Health Services (MHS) has been providing compassionate health care services to the Queensland Community for more than 100 years. With a network of hospitals offering private and publicly funded health services, we provide care for some 500,000 people each year. Located in South Brisbane, Mater Hospital Brisbane is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of medical specialties.

The primary purpose of this role is to provide leadership, direction and ongoing management of the Epilepsy Surgical Unit for the Mater Adult Health Service. You will also provide high quality clinical care to patients attending the Epilepsy Surgical Unit of Mater Adult Public Hospital and to patients with seizures or epilepsy within Mater Health Services as required.

  • Effective leadership, strategic development and management of the Epilepsy Surgical Unit, Mater Adult Hospital.
  • Coordinate and implement, in consultation with the Director of Neurology, an Operational Plan which implements the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors, and ensures the unit meets required targets and benchmarks.
  • Clinical responsibilities in the Epilepsy Surgical Unit, Mater Adult Hospital as required.
  • Plan, implement, monitor and review the activity, income and expenditure for the service.
  • Liaise with other multidisciplinary clinical team members, neurophysiology scientists, allied health and nursing staff, with input into Divisional and Hospital policies, and the development of specialist services.
  • Develop and initiate the future delivery and development of epilepsy surgery evaluation and related services.
  • Initiate, maintain and be responsible for the clinical care of patients during the time they are under the care of the Epilepsy Surgical Unit until such time as they are discharged from the unit.
  • Supervise the day to day activities of junior medical staff and liaise with other senior staff to ensure that appropriate standards are achieved and maintained.
  • Perform a teaching role in medical educational programs both within and outside the Epilepsy Surgical Unit.
  • To lead the development of robust quality assurance processes in collaboration with the Director of Neurology and Director of Neurosciences
  • Develop research program, strengthen collaborations and develop new partnerships including research funding opportunities.
  • Develop innovative community outreach projects to strengthen links with Mater patients throughout Queensland and underserved groups.
  • Ensure there is a strategic approach to the development of contemporary human resource practices and policies including performance management, workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity, and anti-discrimination, and commitment to their implementation.
  • Implement and monitor a performance development program for medical staff within the Unit.

To be considered for this role you must meet the following criteria:

  • Significant (>5 years) clinical experience in the stereoEEG methodology
  • Registered or eligible to be registered as a Medical Practitioner in the State of Queensland.
  • Registered or eligible to be registered as a Medical Specialist in the State of Queensland.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent
  • Level 3 recognition in EEG (or eligible for same, or equivalent)
  • Postgraduate research qualification is highly desirable
  • Other higher qualifications relevant to the discipline of Neurology and Epilepsy surgery in particular
  • Track record in research including success in attracting research funding through grants or awards
  • Demonstrated ability to teach trainees / fellows
