The Opportunity

This is a new opportunity to join the Consumer Action Law Centre as the Director of Legal Practice.

You will lead a legal team of 14, including 5 direct reports and 9 indirect reports, who provide telephone legal advice services to consumers and community workers, and who conduct advocacy and strategic litigation.

As a member of the management team you will report to a passionate and inspiring CEO and also work with other parts of the organisation, including Service Development & Partnerships, the Financial Counselling Practice, and Policy & Campaigns in delivering legal services to the community.

The Consumer Action Law Centre was awarded the Access to Justice Award by the Law Institute of Victoria and has around 50 people who are passionate about providing accessible, high quality legal services to consumers, and they work hard to shape a fairer legal system for society’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged through policy submissions and law reform.

As Director of Legal Practice your role will include, but is not limited to:

Oversight of strategic litigation in higher jurisdictions that achieves broader policy objectives and empowers clients through legal advocacy;

  • Contribute to the management of risk across the centre and improve procedures and systems to enhance service delivery;
  • Ensure the delivery of accurate legal advice in accordance with guidelines to maximise access to justice for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Victoria;
  • Manage the Legal Practice trust account;
  • Oversee other activities of the legal practice, including case intake meetings and responding to requests from regulators;
  • Undertake stakeholder liaison and networking, including with regulators, industry and the community legal sector, in order to promote the presence and reputation of Consumer Action as the pre-eminent centre of expertise in consumer law, build an effective and sustainable community sector and shape a fairer legal system;
  • Contribute to the strategic direction and general management of Consumer Action Law Centre as a member of the Management team; and
  • Support other team members and assist with mentoring more junior members and educating the organisation.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have at least 6 years-experience as a Lawyer;
  • Be admitted as a Lawyer in Victoria;
  • Be a Principal Solicitor authorised to receive trust money;
  • Have experience in either: consumer law, consumer credit law,
  • bankruptcy law, civil procedure in both Federal and Victorian
  • jurisdictions and debt enforcement law and procedure, however not all areas are essential;
  • Have experience in helping disadvantaged people, such as, through pro-bono/volunteer work, community legal centres, ombudsman schemes or acting for disadvantaged plaintiffs;
  • Have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead, build
  • relationships, negotiate, influence and educate internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and have the ability to effectively chair dynamic meetings.
