JOB DESCRIPTION

Software Engineering Manager - Advertising & Marketing Platforms

At Canva, we work every day to make a significant positive impact on society. Our mission is to democratise design and empower creativity for anyone, on any device and platform.

Since launch in April 2013, we have grown exponentially, amassing over 40+ million users in over 100 languages. We are one of the world’s fastest-growing technology companies in the world, with software engineering being a core part of who we are. We are building the foundation for Canva's future growth by expanding our engineering and product development capabilities.

Canva's Marketing & Engagement Platform group has over 20 engineers that span a range of disciplines including backend, frontend, and data science. Due to our organisational focus, we expect to continue to grow the size of this group in the next 12-18 months. In order to ensure the team, platform, and business continues to scale and reliably serve our millions of users, we’re welcoming an experienced software engineering leader - focused on technical strategy and direction, people leadership and management, and cross-collaboration to lead engineering for the M&E Platform Group.

Role Responsibilities
  • Drive the technical strategy across the M&E Platform group in a fast-paced, innovation-focused environment
  • Collaborate with talented engineers, in both systems and data, to scope and solve complex problems that are highly impactful across the business
  • People leader across engineering in the M&E Platform group, coaching and supporting the team leads
  • Scale engineering within the group to meet the growing needs of the roadmap, which is expected to be 3 - 5+ teams by mid-2021
  • Develop the M&E Platform group, bringing on board world-class talent and partnering with recruiters where needed, and identifying and developing emerging leaders within the group.
  • Nurture the progression of current members within the team, creating a team for the present and future needs of Canva
  • Foster a culture of communication, bridging the communication gap between teams, group, and company leadership
  • Coordinating and communicating across various specialties and parts of the business to understand the impact and feasibility of strategy goals within the group.
  • Ensure the M&E Platform group is constantly working towards delivering on the group strategy and vision by continuously assessing current and future business needs.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Previous experience as a Software Engineer - and still in tune with software engineering fundamentals and first principles. You should have strong technical and people leadership skills
  • Five or more (5+) years of technical and people leadership, having previously created high performing and psychologically safe teams, where everyone is able to share their best ideas and be their best selves
  • Invested in working with engineers on growth and development opportunities to help further their skillset and grow into new roles, with an ability to deliver relevant and timely feedback (positive & constructive) to help them to continuously improve and learn
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; with the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds, with different expertise, and with different professional and personal needs
  • Experience making careful engineering tradeoffs, particularly around "Build vs Buy", evaluating potential third party systems to partner with, and managing and working with vendors to meet Canva's business needs
  • Strong customer focus to understand the use cases and requirements of internal stakeholders, and identify opportunities to empower them to do their best work
  • Be capable of leading by example - promoting Canva’s values, no-blame mentality, and engineering values
Bonus Experience (not required)
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining complex systems to apply statistics and machine learning at scale. Familiarity with working on very large data sets with big data tools such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, and MapReduce
  • Experience architecting and building high performance, Martech/Adtech systems capable of processing large volumes of data in real time, and that are secure and preserve customer privacy
  • In depth knowledge of the Martech and Adtech landscapes, architectures, and vendors
  • Flexible daily working hours, we value work-life balance
  • Breakfast and lunch prepared by our wonderful Vibe team in Sydney HQ
  • Onsite-Gym and Yoga Membership
  • End-of-Trip Facilities: Bicycle parking and showers
  • Generous parental (including secondary) leave policy
  • Pet-friendly offices
  • Internal Coaching and Employee Support Programs
  • Sponsored social clubs, team events, and celebrations
This role is open to remote applicants within Australia that do not need visa sponsorship. We will require occasional travel to Sydney up to three times per quarter, once it is safe to do so.

The Canva workspace is set up for you to do your best work and have a great time doing so, with breakout areas, little nooks, and quiet places to retreat.

If you're seeking professional growth and enjoy working on complex, large-scale, online products that delight our millions of individual and business users alike all over the world - then apply now to be considered for the position!
