icare protects, insures and cares for the people, assets and businesses of NSW. They provide workers compensation insurance to more than 328,000 public and private sector employers in NSW and their 3.6 million employees. Central to this is their ongoing focus on return to work outcomes for injured workers and employers, and an ethos of service to the NSW community. More recently, icare has embarked on strategic change to uplift their risk culture.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director as a key member of the icare executive leadership team, the Group Executive Risk and Governance (Sydney-based), leads and executes icare’s strategic risk management culture and framework. The role has overall leadership and responsibility for the strategic management of risk, governance, internal audit, compliance and legal functions for icare. You will lead and influence leaders and teams to drive and monitor a positive risk culture and provide trusted advice to the icare CEO and Board on strategic and operational risks. The role oversees the provision of legal advice, including the provision of General Counsel and Company Secretarial support and advice to the icare Group Executive team, CEO and Board.

You will be an experienced executive leader, with relevant high-level professional experience in insurance (or related industry), the ability to combine a strategic future-focused approach with a deep connection with business operations, sound financial management skills, exceptional stakeholder management and interpersonal skills and experience working with a Board (Audit and Risk Committees) in a collaborative and constructive manner.

icare is seeking a leader who will inspire and drive change and lift icare’s risk, compliance and governance performance. You will drive a culture of integrity and professionalism across the organisation, and in dealings cross-government, cross-jurisdiction and outside of government. This will be complemented by an appreciation of icare’s social purpose, listening to and working collaboratively with stakeholders and regulators with transparency. Superior communication ability, tenacity, emotional intelligence and a respect for working within a values-driven and purpose led organisation are required.

Naturally, your skills will be supported by formal qualifications (degree level or higher in accounting, business, the law, or equivalent) in addition to being accredited as a Certified Chief Risk Officer (CCRO) with the Risk Management Institute of Australia (RMIIA), with General Counsel experience and/or Graduate status with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).
