About the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH):
The creation of the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) allows a dedicated focus on the community wellbeing and the social recovery of Victoria. DFFH will continue to support Victorians, focus on better services in 2021 and beyond, and create opportunities to deliver important work started before the pandemic and to lead bold and innovative reform.
DFFH includes the former Department of Health and Human Services portfolios of Child Protection, Prevention of Family Violence, Housing and Disability, Ageing and Carers. It is also responsible for the key portfolios of Multicultural Affairs, LGBTQI+ Equality, Veterans and the Offices for Women and Youth, enhancing the alignment with policy areas and portfolios focusing on the recovery and growth of diverse communities.
The Legal Services Branch provides a full suite of legal services including, legislative interpretation, property, planning and personal injury advice, contract and workplace law, dispute resolution, commercial transactions, brand and intellectual property rights, occupational health and safety and liability issues.
About the role:
In a new department that is focussed on equality and fairness, the newly created role of Executive Director, Legal Services is the department's General Counsel and provides a unique opportunity for an experienced lawyer to build and lead a large, results-oriented legal team in the provision of strategic legal advice and services to portfolio Ministers and the Department to ensure integrity of decision making; effective public policy making; and efficient delivery of education and regulatory programs. The General Counsel is expected to provide thought leadership on law reform issues in addition to managing the usual transactional elements of the position and leading and influencing the culture of the team. The role also leads the provision of support to the department's child protection functions with a strong focus on child safety and family wellbeing.
About you:
Crucial to your success in this position will be your sound leadership, communication and management skills. You will have at least 10 years' post qualification experience in either law firm practices, the public sector and/or private enterprise. Strong commercial and political acumen, a good “risk radar”, a customer focused approach, good judgment, and the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders are key attributes.
