The Technical Officer (Electronics) is responsible for contributing to the operational effectiveness of the Traffic Technical Support group within the Radio and Technology Support Unit (RTSU), and for contributing to successful SAPOL prosecutions by technically developing, maintaining and modifying a range of technical equipment such as fixed red light and speed camera equipment, mobile traffic speed camera units, laser and radar speed detection units, breath analysis equipment, ensuring that all such equipment is maintained to the manufacturer’s specifications and the appropriate Australian Standards.

The incumbent will undertake the role of a Signatory Officer, achieving and maintaining the competency levels required to support the NATA accredited RTSU Calibration Laboratory. This will include supervision in and contribution to the maintenance, updating and development of the Laboratory’s Quality System, manuals, documentation, processes and procedures and other duties as may be required to maintain NATA accreditation, relevant standards and operational best practice.

The incumbent may also undertake research projects, develop specifications and assess the suitability of equipment for use by SAPOL, to ensure the optimum ongoing efficiency of SAPOL’s Traffic Operations technical related, specialist equipment. The incumbent is expected to operate across a broad spectrum of disciplines in the electronic and communications engineering fields, which includes training and supporting less experienced technicians, and providing operational support in special operations and exercises.

Special Conditions

The incumbent must hold a current Australian work eligibility status and will be subject to a criminal history check. Incumbent may be assigned to other duties at this remuneration level or equivalent.

This position may be required to perform out of hours work on an infrequent basis. On-call and re-call arrangements apply.
Regular intrastate travel to conduct field repairs of traffic equipment, requires working in a roadside environment. Interstate travel and some out of hours work may be required.
The incumbent will be required to attend court and provide evidence as to the reliability and validity of calibration of equipment in supporting SAPOL prosecutions.
The incumbent is required to participate in SAPOL’s Individual Performance Management program.


Associate or Advanced Diploma (or equivalent) in electronics or closely related field.

TGO3 $79,293 - $83,715 per annum
