The Role
You will lead, supervise, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team who conduct research and provide specialist advice to Defence on the impact of the undersea environment on underwater acoustics, with emphasis on exploiting knowledge of the environment to optimise performance of underwater sensor systems, particularly sonar. This includes developing techniques to predict, measure, and characterise the undersea environment, and physics-based models to characterise impact of the environment on sonar sensor systems.

You will collaborate with other DSTG teams to apply knowledge of the undersea acoustical environment to a range of studies, decision-support capabilities, and development of concept demonstrators. You will engage with key Defence stakeholders and initiate research programs with national scientific partners within the National Marine Enterprise and international partners concerned with measuring, modelling, and exploiting the undersea environment for military effect.

About our Team
The Ocean Environment and Acoustics team leads efforts to better characterise and understand key properties of the underwater environment, and conducts research into sound transmission, acoustic reflection and scattering, seafloor geoacoustics, and the physics and statistics of underwater acoustic signal fields. They deliver expert advice to Defence for the exploitation of the underwater environment to optimise sonar system performance.

The team is part of the Undersea Environment and System Exploitation Science and Technology Capability, whose mission is to increase capability through improved employment of sensors, awareness of platform signature effects, and exploitation of ocean environmental knowledge for operational advantage.

Our Ideal Candidate
We seek a person who is passionate about science and technology relating to the undersea environment and physics of underwater acoustics, and is motivated to lead a small team developing techniques to improve underwater sensing through exploitation of undersea environmental and system knowledge. You will understand the importance of effective supervision and mentoring for staff, and be able to balance priorities between client needs and underpinning research. You will also have a high level of initiative and aptitude for working in a multidisciplinary environment, and be able to develop and sustain external linkages with industry, academia, and international organisations.
