About The Role
Role Location: Melbourne, Sydney, Singapore
Role Type: Permanent, Full-time
The Head of Legal, Markets leads and manages the legal team who support ANZ’s Markets business. The team sits within the Institutional Legal Group (ILG) and comprises approximately 30 people based in locations across Australia, Asia and Europe.
As Head of Legal, Markets you will be responsible for all legal services provided to ANZ’s Markets business globally and provides strategic legal advice to senior management of the Markets business and its Risk partners, helping to ensure the right outcomes are achieved. This role reports to the General Counsel Institutional and sits on the ILG leadership team.
Your key accountabilities in this role will include:
  • Partnering with the Markets businesses and its Risk partners to develop a deep understanding of the Markets business, its customers and its strategic agenda.
  • Proactively providing practical, commercial and legally sound solutions to the business to achieve great outcomes for ANZ Markets and its customers.
  • Providing strategic legal advice and innovative legal solutions to the Managing Director of Markets, the Markets Leadership team and the Group General Manager of Markets Risk across all relevant areas of law.
  • Actively participating on various committees that support the business, its risk management and its strategic agenda.
  • Helping the Markets business understand the legal and regulatory landscape, global trends and risks in the execution of their strategic plans.
  • Working with Compliance and business to ensure that changes are made to processes when relevant new laws are introduced.
  • Identifying and assisting with resolution of legal, regulatory or risk issues in each jurisdiction in which the Markets business operates.
  • Managing and resolving crises and problems within an operationally, jurisdictionally and legally complex business.
  • Overseeing the legal services provided by internal and external legal teams to ensure the Markets business is consistently provided with high quality legal services and are aware of the legal risks involved in their transactions and matters.
  • Managing the Markets Legal team’s use of external legal services to ensure legal requirement are met within budget and agreed time lines in the most cost effective and efficient manger.
  • Leading and building a highly performing and engaged team, growing capabilities and skills to ensure the team remains fit for future requirements and is risk sensitive.

About You
To grow and be successful in this role, you’ll ideally bring the following:
  • As a highly experienced lawyer, you have significant post-qualification experience in areas relevant to the Markets business: laws relating to derivatives, structured products, financial services, market conduct, competition, market infrastructure and capital markets.
  • Significant transactional and advisory experience as in-house counsel and within an international law firm, including: product development, transactional experience in the Markets business areas, regulatory interactions, disputes, defaults, advising on financial services regulation, licensing and breach reporting, market misconduct and conduct risk, clearing, trading platforms and markets infrastructure, netting and implementation of regulatory change.
  • Deep knowledge and experience in advising on ISDA documentation relevant to the Markets businesses.
  • Extensive commercial understanding of the markets businesses including: Rates, FX, Credit, DCM, Structured Solutions, Commodities and Repo along with a strong understanding of how these businesses operate and of relevant compliance issues, risk issues and products.
  • Experience managing and resolving complex legal, regulatory, operational and business problems that attract senior management interest and exposure.
  • Outcome focused with the ability to think strategically as well as remain calm and exercise good judgment under pressure.
  • Exposure to both the law and market practices relevant to the Markets business in Australia, Asia and Europe.
  • Demonstrated expertise in influencing senior executives effectively through the ability to synthesise complex legal advice, place it firmly in a business context and convey it in a compelling manner to senior executives.
  • Proven ability to lead a high performing team of legal professionals while seeking to create a culture of excellence and customer focus.
  • Tertiary legal qualification from a common law jurisdiction and admission as a lawyer in England and Wales and/or an Australian state.
