About the Organisation

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is the largest jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues at metropolitan and regional locations, equating to approximately 90 per cent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year.

About the Role

The Strategic Advisor to the Chief Magistrate is a career-shaping opportunity to work alongside Judge Lisa Hannan in a high-level advisory capacity. The Magistrates' Court is Victoria's busiest court and the position is critical to the management of the Court and supports the Chief Magistrate's role as a member of Courts Council.

As a representative of the Chief Magistrate and working closed with the Chief Executive Officer of the Court, the appointee will display leadership qualities and liaise with the judiciary and a broad range of stakeholders throughout the justice system.

A critical element of the role will be the building and fostering of strong, trusted relationships with stakeholders across the judiciary, Courts and State Government.

The Strategic Advisor is accountable to the Chief Executive Officer but works day-to-day in support of the Chief Magistrate. This includes responsibility for effectively managing the Chambers of the Chief Magistrate and a small team of support staff, being accountable for driving a performance-focused culture and managing relationships with key stakeholders to ensure MCV meets its objectives.

Against a backdrop of an issues rich, fast paced and dynamic operating context, your mandate will include a key focus on:

  • Providing expert, high level briefings, written advice and evidence-based analysis to the Chief Magistrate across a broad range of subject matter relevant to the court, public policy and administration, governance, management and leadership, and communications.
  • Managing the Chief Magistrate' Chambers, ensuring the highest level of support is provided to the Chief Magistrate in the exercise of her public leadership, judicial, and administrative roles, including via the provision of speaking notes.
  • Building and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with the Chief Magistrate, Chief Executive Officer, Courts Executive, Government, and key stakeholders.

About the Candidate

The ideal candidate will be experienced in strategic planning, corporate governance, driving innovation and influencing key initiatives with a diverse range of stakeholders. They will have exceptional communication and conceptual skills and must display integrity, decisiveness and creative problem-solving ability.

Legal qualifications are mandatory. Other academic qualifications within a relevant business or policy related discipline are considered ideal. A minimum of 5 years' experience in a senior leadership role in an organisation of similar size and scope is advantageous. A Victorian Public Service background, whilst desirable, is not considered essential to success.
