JOB DESCRIPTION

Exciting senior role combining advocacy and leadership at Victoria Legal Aid.

  • Full time fixed term position – 3 years
  • Salary range SES1: $192,800 - $249,700 (TRP)
  • Senior role combining high profile advocacy with leadership of a team of experienced advocates

Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) plays a core role in Victoria's justice system by providing legal aid services to the community through an in-house legal practice, contracted private lawyers and by funding community legal centres. We are a statutory authority overseen by a Board of Directors who are appointed by the Victorian Attorney-General. VLA serves the broader community by providing information, legal advice and education with a focus on the prevention and early resolution of legal problems, and legal representation to those who need it most. VLA sees the connection between legal, social and economic problems and works to address the barriers that prevent people from accessing the justice system through strategic litigation and reform. By putting the user at the centre of what we do, VLA seeks to reduce disadvantage, particularly for regional Victorians.

About the role
Reporting to the CEO and as a member of the senior leadership team, this role leads our team of specialist in-house advocates and develops, supports and fosters high-quality advocacy across VLA's Criminal Law, Civil Justice and Family and Children's Law state-wide practice. As Chief Counsel you will make a unique contribution to shaping the law for marginalised Victorians. You will appear in novel and complex cases in the superior courts and play a critical leadership role in responding to organisational, policy and law reform issues, while driving the development of advocacy opportunities and skills for our lawyers.

About you
You will have demonstrated experience in effectively leading and developing a team of specialised counsel and bring significant experience and high-level skills in advocacy and complex litigation in the higher courts. Your strong alignment with the vision and values of VLA, combined with your interest and breadth of understanding of all VLA's practice areas, will be fundamental to your success in this role. You also have a solid reputation for your capacity to build strong and productive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders and are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the work of VLA in this exciting leadership role.
